Spybot - Search & Destroy can detect and remove spyware of different kinds from your computer. Spyware is a relatively new kind of threat that common anti-virus applications do not yet cover. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you didn't intentionally install, if your browser crashes, or if you browser start page has changed without your knowing, you most probably have spyware. But even if you don't see anything, you may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging that is silently tracking your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile of you that will be sold to advertisement companies. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm in trying to see if something snooped into your computer, too

1.) Open SpywareBlaster and press the "Disable All Protection" link under "Quick Tasks".
2.) Close SpywareBlaster.
3.) Go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the entry named "SpywareBlaster v3.4"
4.) Download the latest SpywareBlaster installer from the link above and run it.

IE-SPYAD is horribly out of date. Unfortunately, I simply don't have time to update it at present, and I have no expectation that I will be able to update it in the near future.

With regret, we have to announce that update support for dated versions of Spybot-S&D is going to end.

Fighting malware is a task that constantly requires new approaches. Some of these, we will make available through updated versions of tool libraries or plugins, but some make updates of the full software necessary. For those interested in a detailed technical background, see the OpenSBI wiki, which shows some of the changes in structure.

Users with very old hardware, and users of Windows 95 who could not use Spybot-S&D 1.4, chose to stay with very old versions of the software, and we tried to accommodate them by still offering them the updates, with the limitation that Spybot-S&D would complain about a lot of incompatible detection patterns and results would have to be used with extra care.

While we regarded that as a service for the aforementioned group of users, using current detection patterns in old software versions is getting too dangerous if that extra care is not applied, which we simply cannot expect from every user. We therefore decided to restrict updates to the current software version, and during version switches, as has recently happened with the switch to 1.6, the last version for a short while.

If you have any serious reasons for not updating to 1.6, let us know on the forum!

WinPatrol runs fine under x64 systems but we did have a bug in detecting some of the new registry locations found under the Wow6432 registry path. This has been corrected so more than the default auto run locations are detected.

For our corporate customers we’ve had a long time request to hide alert messages and to handle changes with a default action. At the same time, we’re now testing the ability to send a notification of the alert to servers so administrators can review what changes have occured. This stealth feature is disabled except for Enterprise customers and beta testers. The WinPatrol stealth functionality is expected to be available to PLUS members in versions 16.

It may sound crazy but I don’t recommend our regular WinPatrol users upgrade to this version immediately. Just like I always say about Microsoft Windows and other auto-updates I advise waiting a couple weeks before updating. While I’m confident in the stability of the new version, you just never know how changes in software can affect your system.

International versions will be available the holiday weekend. If you already have a language pack installed you can however just download the english build. If you have to ask if you’re an Enterprise customer you’re not.

According to eWeek.com WinPatrol is one of the 10 Free Must-Have Security Tools. “This ultimate watchdog program monitors Windows computers for signs of malicious hacker activity”. The new WinPatrol 2008 continues to be the Swiss Army Knife of Window utilities with the addition of its ActiveX manager.

It seems like every week more problems are reported in Quicktime, RealPlayer, Adobe Flash, Sun’s Java or other 3rd party controls. Once the vulnerability is known the risk increases exponentially until a patch is available. WinPatrol 2008 takes the worry out of waiting for a patch to become available. When a vulnerability is found Scotty will let you disable or set the “kill-bit” on the appropriate control until a new one is made available.

WinPatrol 2008 will also monitor your system and let you know when new ActiveX components try to make their home on your system. If it’s not something you wanted WinPatrol will kill the new component before it can do any damage.

Silent Runners R56 checks four additional values in the HKLM...Control tree and allows IPv6 localhost addresses to be recognized in the HOSTS file. Minor changes have been made to output format.
