From Safer-Networking:

QUOTE

Spybot - Search & Destroy can detect and remove spyware of different kinds from your computer. Spyware is a relatively new kind of threat that common anti-virus applications do not yet cover. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you didn't intentionally install, if your browser crashes, or if you browser start page has changed without your knowing, you most probably have spyware. But even if you don't see anything, you may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging that is silently tracking your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile of you that will be sold to advertisement companies. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm in trying to see if something snooped into your computer, too

Spybot Home Page

Spybot Search & Destroy Forums

Official Archive Page of Spybot definitions.

SpywareBlaster v3.5.1 Database Updates

SpywareBlaster 3.5 has been released!

Prevent the installation of spyware and other potentially unwanted software!

New in this version:
-SpywareBlaster Turbo-Update Technology: Faster and more frequent updates
-Various feature and protection enhancements
-Further optimizations to certain parts of the program
-And lots of other bug fixes and requested tweaks

This 3.5 release provides enhanced updating, performance, and bug fixes.

NEW UPDATING OPTIONS IN SPYWAREBLASTER 3.x
SpywareBlaster still offers the built-in Check for Updates feature. This feature is completely free and allows you to keep up-to-date by clicking on a button in the SpywareBlaster interface.

SpywareBlaster 3.5 now offers SpywareBlaster AutoUpdate - a brand-new updating solution. Just set it up, and AutoUpdate will check at every system boot for the latest updates and enable the newest protection (other options are available).

As much as we would like to provide auto-updating functionality for free, costs are simply too great to make it feasible. AutoUpdate functionality is $9.95 (US) per year, which helps to cover the bandwidth costs. The Check for Updates function remains completely free, as does SpywareBlaster. You only need to pay if you wish to have the extra convenience of AutoUpdate.

Download the latest version

Source Link

It is recommended that you uninstall your current version of SpywareBlaster before installing the new version.
Old Version Spybot Updates Discontinued

QUOTE

With regret, we have to announce that update support for dated versions of Spybot-S&D is going to end.

Fighting malware is a task that constantly requires new approaches. Some of these, we will make available through updated versions of tool libraries or plugins, but some make updates of the full software necessary. For those interested in a detailed technical background, see the OpenSBI wiki, which shows some of the changes in structure.

Users with very old hardware, and users of Windows 95 who could not use Spybot-S&D 1.4, chose to stay with very old versions of the software, and we tried to accommodate them by still offering them the updates, with the limitation that Spybot-S&D would complain about a lot of incompatible detection patterns and results would have to be used with extra care.

While we regarded that as a service for the aforementioned group of users, using current detection patterns in old software versions is getting too dangerous if that extra care is not applied, which we simply cannot expect from every user. We therefore decided to restrict updates to the current software version, and during version switches, as has recently happened with the switch to 1.6, the last version for a short while.

If you have any serious reasons for not updating to 1.6, let us know on the forum!
Spybot News

New Version Release: WinPatrol 15.9.2008

What's New:

Explorer Integration of PLUS Info
One of the main features of WinPatrol PLUS is the ability to look up information for strange filenames. We now have over 19 thousand descriptions available in a form that mere humans can understand. Our new WinPatrol now adds the ability to research programs to any executable on your system directly from Windows Explorer.
Quicker Access to PLUS Info
In previous versions of WinPatrol we shipped PLUS descriptions on some of the most popular file requests. As our database grew and things changed it became obvious that we would never be installing our entire database on local machines. Our new version removes the check for local PLUS data saving you from unnecessary access to your hard drive and speeds up access to our online database
Bug Fix: Firefox 3 Cookies
At this time WinPatrol hasn't been updated to manage cookies in Firefox 3. Cookies in Firefox 3 use a database method called SQlite which is completely different then its old plain cookies.txt file. We've removed the option if Firefox 3 or greater is detected so there is no confusion.
Bug Fix: AppInit_DLL
One rarely used startup location frequently used by malware is a registry key AppInit_DLL found at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows. This key is now also used by security programs as way to hide from users and malware. WinPatrol has always monitored this location successfully but recently the over use of this location helped us find a bug in the way we parsed this key. Users of Kaspersky Internet Security were the first to discover this problem because KIS 2009 actually stores four separate DLL's in this location.
In previous versions of WinPatrol Scotty would barf on three files or more.

International versions will be available the holiday weekend. If you already have a language pack installed you can however just download the english build. If you have to ask if you’re an Enterprise customer you’re not. Thank you for your support!

WinPatrol Upgrade Page

New Version: Spybot Search & Destroy 1.6

To keep up with the latest threats, and solve some issues and feature requests users had, we're proud to announce Spybot-S&D version 1.6. Some of the features include:

Improved Scan Speed
Reported a few weeks ago as one of the big issues users face, Spybot-S&D 1.6 integrates parts of the future 2.0 file scanning engine to speed up the on-demand scan.

Up-to-date browser support
Both immunization and the on-demand scan are able to access a dozen different browsers, which now includes the latest revisions of the most popular ones, Firefox and Opera.

Easier On-Access Use
Until now, our on-access part was able to block bad entries, but at the same time, confused many novice users by asking for confirmation on changes of other monitored system entries as well. While this is a great feature for all experienced users who want full control over their systems, we decided that we need to make this easier for the average user, and integrated automated decisions based on the system entry database built through our RunAlyzer, containing more than quarter of a million decisions.

OpenSBI
Safer Networking also announces OpenSBI, our attempt at opening up the fight against malware to anyone who wants to participate. OpenSBI means we've published documenation and tools that anyone can use to create their own malware detection patterns for use with Spybot-S&D, and share those with other Spybot-S&D users.
Diversity - everyone can create detection templates for any software, without depending on a central authority to acknowledge its threat.
Neutrality - we cannot be bought to remove detections from our database, but if you do not believe us, you can simply publish your own rules against some malware.
Continuity - OpenSBI ensures that you'll get updates as long as someone is interested in updating the database (which does not mean we intend to do less work in adding new detections).
Flexibility - as a system administrator using the network edition, you can make sure that working time is not wasted by employees playing the latest Moorhuhn clone if you add your own detection for it. Keep in mind that some relaxation is said to even improve work results

 Spybot Search & Destroy Home

WinPatrol Update: Corporate & x64 Users

QUOTE

WinPatrol runs fine under x64 systems but we did have a bug in detecting some of the new registry locations found under the Wow6432 registry path. This has been corrected so more than the default auto run locations are detected.

For our corporate customers we’ve had a long time request to hide alert messages and to handle changes with a default action. At the same time, we’re now testing the ability to send a notification of the alert to servers so administrators can review what changes have occured. This stealth feature is disabled except for Enterprise customers and beta testers. The WinPatrol stealth functionality is expected to be available to PLUS members in versions 16.

It may sound crazy but I don’t recommend our regular WinPatrol users upgrade to this version immediately. Just like I always say about Microsoft Windows and other auto-updates I advise waiting a couple weeks before updating. While I’m confident in the stability of the new version, you just never know how changes in software can affect your system.

International versions will be available the holiday weekend.
WinPatrol 2008 Released

QUOTE

According to eWeek.com WinPatrol is one of the 10 Free Must-Have Security Tools. “This ultimate watchdog program monitors Windows computers for signs of malicious hacker activity”. The new WinPatrol 2008 continues to be the Swiss Army Knife of Window utilities with the addition of its ActiveX manager.

It seems like every week more problems are reported in Quicktime, RealPlayer, Adobe Flash, Sun’s Java or other 3rd party controls. Once the vulnerability is known the risk increases exponentially until a patch is available. WinPatrol 2008 takes the worry out of waiting for a patch to become available. When a vulnerability is found Scotty will let you disable or set the “kill-bit” on the appropriate control until a new one is made available.

WinPatrol 2008 will also monitor your system and let you know when new ActiveX components try to make their home on your system.
New Version Release: Spyware Blaster v4.0

SpywareBlaster 4.0 has been released!

Prevent the installation of spyware and other potentially unwanted software!

New in this version:

Full Vista support

Protection for Netscape

Protection for Seamonkey

Protection for Flock

A brand-new user interface

Various feature and protection enhancements

Further optimizations to every part of the program

And lots of other bug fixes and requested tweaks

Provides Protection for the Following Browsers

Internet Explorer
and any browsers that use the Internet Explorer engine, including:[list]

AOL web browser

Avant Browser

Slim Browser

Maxthon (formerly MyIE2)

Also:

Mozilla Firefox

Netscape

Seamonkey

Flock

This 4.0 release provides enhanced protection, performance, and bug fixes.

UPDATING OPTIONS IN SPYWAREBLASTER
SpywareBlaster still offers the built-in Check for Updates feature. This feature is completely free and allows you to keep up-to-date by clicking on a button in the SpywareBlaster interface.

SpywareBlaster also offers SpywareBlaster AutoUpdate - a brand-new updating solution.

SpywareBlaster is freeware.
Download the latest version here

We recommend using a clean install to upgrade to the 4.0 release.

Clean Install Instructions:

Open SpywareBlaster and press the "Disable All Protection" link under "Quick Tasks".

Close SpywareBlaster.

Go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the entry named "SpywareBlaster v3.5.1"

Download the latest SpywareBlaster installer from here

Follow prompts to install

Silent Runners R56

QUOTE

Silent Runners R56 checks four additional values in the HKLM...Control tree and allows IPv6 localhost addresses to be recognized in the HOSTS file. Minor changes have been made to output format.

1. HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\BootVerificationProgram\ImagePath
2. HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\Authentication Packages
3. HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Execute
4. HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\SetupExecute

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

I added these values for a variety of reasons:

Geert M ( http://www.runscanner.net/ ) recommended that I add 1, 3 and 4. Thanks, Geert!
Microsoft documents #1:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechn...ntry/58555.mspx

An empty value exists by default for #4 in Vista.

I included #3 because, well, Autoruns checks it. (I can't seem to find anything else about it.)

I've saved #2 for last because it's the most interesting. I thank Jay S. of HandyNetworks.com for bringing it to my attention.
It's documented by Microsoft here:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/a...784(VS.85).aspx
It turns out that it's an exceptionally powerful launch point, since it's accessed during login.

IPv6 localhost notation
-----------------------
Vista includes "::1" in the HOSTS file to point to localhost. This is
IPv6 shorthand for 127.0.0.1. Thanks to Jules C. for cluing me in.

Vista execution tip
-------------------
Silent Runners will be able to look at a lot more places in Vista if its run from an Administrative-level command prompt.

To get to such a command prompt, right-click on "Command Prompt" in the Start menu and choose "Run as Administrator". After clicking through the UA alert, cd to the Silent Runners directory and issue the following command: cscript "Silent Runners.vbs"

Note that the quotes are mandatory.

The launch points list on the web site has been updated.

The updated script (R55) can be found here

A zipped version can be found here
