Thanks to Mosaic over at Gladiator security forums for pointing out this very cool program , I find myself using it a lot..

You probably will too.

If you use XP you will probably have come across the annoying message that you cant move , delete a folder or file etc because it's in use ..

It has many other flavors:

Cannot delete file: Access is denied
There has been a sharing violation.
The source or destination file may be in use.
The file is in use by another program or user.
Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.

Unlocker is the solution

Once you install unlocker , which is free , you can then have unlocker add an entry to your right click menu.

Whenever you get that annoying file is in use message , just right click the file and unlock the process and thats it. No need to edit the registry to fix the problem.

This program is very simple but works very good.

Thanks again for this. (I downloaded it before but never got around to trying it.)
I wonder what is the usual cause of this and maybe this tool will reveal it. Sometimes flushing the RAM to disk and back will fix it, or disconnecting a shared network drive. But sometimes only a reboot will allow such annoyances as an empty folder to be deleted. I've also seen this with a USB external drive; the drive won't spin down to disconnect because something is using it. We'll see...

When an anti-malware points to a .DLL and it doesn't want to be erased, this tool should come in very very handy. Yep.
(I wish it would show the program preventing erasure!)

Thanks for the update DF

I've since used this against a few hard to kill spyware files , might have been some of the spysherrif stuff , that just kept restoring themselves and couldnt be deleted normally because they were in use .... I was able to select all the files all at once and deleted them without needing to reboot with unlocker and it wiped them all out.

great little app !

- New language: Slovenian thanks to Aleksander 'Quattro' Hropot
- Improved code: Unlocker is now much faster to list handles and to appear. Between 2x and 30x faster depending on the situation. Thanks to schwit for reporting the problem and testing my fixes
- Improved code: Rewrote part of the driver
- Fixed bug: Some processes and their handles were missing depending on their accessing rights, this is fixed now, and ZoneAlarm temporary files handles appear in Unlocker for example. Again thanks to schwit for reporting the problem and testing my fixes
- Fixed bug: If a cd or dvd was removed and a handle was existing, an annoying explorer dialog box would appear and the handle could not be listed

Great prog,though I nearly caused it to have internal bleeding when trying to unlock quite a few files lol,one at a time is the way to go with this little genius.

I've been using this program for about 6 monts now. It's a great program, and very effective. I sure could have used this about a year ago, instead of having to use a renamer program just to move delete or to even rename my files.

This program is a "must have"
