Funkytoad.com released ZonedOut - a utility that will allow you manage Internet Explorer's restricted sites.  With ZonedOut, you can Add, Delete, Import, Export, Build a WhiteList and More!

The Menus

Why ZonedOut is useful?

If you are using any program (e.g. SpywareBlaster, Spybot Search & Destroy) or file (e.g. IE-SPYAD) that add list of bad sites in Internet Explorer's restricted zone, you will find ZonedOut useful!  There are times we want to whitelist a site but the Internet Explorer's restricted sites' manager do not have “search utility“.  You will find yourself scrolling or mess with Windows Registry Editor or use notepad to manually edit out what you don't want to be in restricted sites.  With ZonedOut's search function, you'll just search for the URL and viola, you can delete it using ZonedOut or add it in whitelist.  The whitelist editor will keep the URL for you.  The next time a new definition or updated restricted sites is released, you don't need to do it all over again.  It can be imported as a complete list or parsed against your whitelist.

There are more useful functions in ZonedOut that I'm sure user's of IE-SPYAD or other program that adds restricted sites will enjoy.  Get it.. it's free from Funkytoad.com

Funkytoad.com authored Hoster and IniBeast.  Hoster is another utility to manage your HOST file while IniBeast is ini file tweaker.

Disclosure:  I admit, I'm involved in the making of ZonedOut.  No, I don't know programming.  It's only my idea.  I've been looking for such utility to manage restricted sites ... easier and I gave up looking for it because there is nada (as per Google OK? wink.gif ).  I contacted Todd and beg biggrin.gif  to “please create a restricted site manager utility“.  Todd is one of administrator over in Gladiator Security Forums (visit us there!..).  Thanks Todd for granting my request.  Wait for my next request Todd tongue.gif

**Stay tuned - in the next few days E. Howes Author of IESpyad will be fashioning a file specifically for importing with ZonedOut

From ChaChazz:

Please do not use this tool with the current IE-Spyad files.

QUOTE
Hi All:
Please note that you cannot use ZonedOut with the current version of IE-SPYAD, because ZonedOut requires a plain text domains list -- IE-SPYAD is currently formatted as a Registry file.

Also, please do not try to use ZonedOut with the plain text AGNIS Sites list that's available from the same download page. Although the AGNIS Sites list is a plain text domains list, a number of the CoolWebSearch IP address ranges are not compatible with ZonedOut as presently formatted. If you uninstall your standard IE-SPYAD list and install the AGNIS Sites list with ZonedOut, you will vastly increase your exposure to CoolWebSearch exploits.

I will be building a plain text domains list that is compatible with ZonedOut in the next day or so. Please wait until that list has been released.

IE-SPYAD for ZonedOut
Hi All:

Attached to this post is a version of the IE-SPYAD Restricted sites list that is designed to be used with the Internet Explorer zone management utility "ZonedOut":

Following is direct download link:
http://www.broadbandreports.com/r0/downloa.../iespyad_zo.zip

At present, full documentation for this version of IE-SPYAD is lacking, and you should consider this *beta* software. This version is equivalent to the Oct. 3 version of IE-SPYAD that was just released.

Notes:
- The main IE-SPYAD Restricted sites list is contained in the file IE-ADS.TXT. A separate file named IE-NFE.TXT contains optional sites that are "Not for Everyone." Yet another file (ADULT.TXT) with adult sites that were removed from the main IE-SPYAD list is stored in the \ADULT sub-directory. It is recommended that you load only the main IE-SPYAD list (IE-ADS.TXT).

- Before installing the IE-SPYAD Restricted sites list, please uninstall the current Restricted sites list by using either ZonedOut or the uninstaller that came with the last standard version of IE-SPYAD that you downloaded.

- ZonedOut will load the Restricted sites list only to HKEY_CURRENT_USER. If you need to load a Restricted sites list to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, you'll need to use the standard IE-SPYAD2, which is available from:
https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm#IESPYAD

- ZonedOut will load the Restricted sites list only to the "Domains" and "Ranges" Registry keys. If you're using Windows 2003 Server and have not disabled the Internet Explorer "Enhanced Security Configuration" component, you'll need to use the standard IE-SPYAD and edit the IE-ADS.REG file to use the "EscDomains" and "EscRanges" key. The standard IE-SPYAD is available from:
https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm#IESPYAD

- When loading the Restricted sites list, ZonedOut will fail to load a small handful of domains with extremely long names. At present it is not known why ZonedOut fails to add those domains to the Restricted sites zone. The domains in questions are:

- Lines that are commented out with a double-asterisk (**) are ignored by ZonedOut when it parses a Restricted sites file.

- For a full discussion of issues related to IE-SPYAD and the Restricted sites zone, please see the standard IE-SPYAD ReadMe online:
https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/res/ie-spyad.txt

Note that the above ReadMe contains some information that is pertinent only to the standard versions of IE-SPYAD, which use Registry files (.REG) and a batch file installation program.

- For notes on using ZonedOut, please consult the ZonedOut home page:

ZonedOut v2.1

Change Log:
Version 2.1 10-7-05
  • Fixed importing/adding of super long URL's
  • Improved deleting and "remove all" entries
  • Fixed "apparent" freezing on large remove all and Import functions
  • Added total sites count in progress bar

Important Notes:
Known Issue (all versions) -If you have by chance "immunized" your computer with Spybot Search and Destroy, and use ZonedOut to "Remove All" restricted sites - ZonedOut will remove your trusted sites as well. Note that if you remove Spybot Search and Destroys Immunization the problem goes away.

All Versions - ZonedOut only manages IE Zones for the "Current User" - and not on a "Local Machine" Basis.
