ok just wondering what is the most used and also the most reliable instant messenger program.
has anybody tried the encrypting add ons at all , or knows of something thats new and not very well known..?
so if you get a chance let us know what you use and why.

If you do use Trillian, it would be interesting to know which of the above networks you use also, given that Trillian is best used for more than one network. I have most of them, and I also use IRC.

Some thoughts on security of IM apps.
MSN messenger is not very secure, it even tells you that every time you start a conversation. Yahoo Messenger is similarly insecure AFAICS. I would use another app, frankly. Trillian supports Secure IM over AIM & ICQ, which coupled with the ability to hide your IP, makes it a fairly secure solution. BTW, Trillian 2 has been released recently.
Integrity Messenger makes claims about being secure, although it's not immediately obvious from their site how they have implemented the security. I installed it, although I wasn't too keen on the interface, even though it worked well. On the up side, Integrity is be integrated with Invision Power Board, and there is a free version!

yeah thanks for the poll bluetack thats a much better idea. 
i only really use MSN to chat with family and some friends, i have used an encryption plugin with it that worked really well and as long as the other person had the plugin too you could send encrypted messages and files, but it was only a 30 day trial..
i had the Tricksoft chat program running for a little while , just between my friend and i , it used UDP connections and could transfer files ok, except for ebooks and pdfs which got screwed for some reason.
other than that i dont like to use them and i definitely dont trust their security.

yeah i keep getting messages to upgrade windows messenger to the new version , but i dont think so .
trillian have nearly finished the update to get rid of the nag.... just wait...
