Hey, I thought this was a good place to ask, as there`s many knowledgeable people here.
I was wondering what you people thought of private Bit Torrent sites. I mean the ones that have limited signups. I know for sure they`d be less risky than public sites, but any copyright holders could just as easily get in, and snoop on people. I was curious also, if the RIAA has any jurisdiction outside the USA. I know you aren`t lawyers, but would be interesting still. Would they even send a violation to an ISP?
Finally, one more question, I downloaded from a couple movies from IRC, and they were from Korean data centres, not blocked with PW, although I think I have seen some blocked from there before. I imagine they are safe, as the MPAA, or whoever wouldn`t aid downloaders, and that part of the world has lots of piracy going on, I mean physical copies, but probably online too. Anyway, I guess that is all, I use PW and continue to do so. Just curious. Thanks very much!!

One thing I've noticed about private sites is lower total number of users; so slower overall speeds. I imagine most private sites don't allow DHT, which is a security risk anyway, but would increase speeds. So I think private sites are slow.
I think the limit on users may be a factor of the forum software the individual sites use?
But I don't know the answers to the rest of your questions. Please consider signing up so you can access the other areas of Bluetack and have a better chance of getting your questions actually answered.

Private trackers are actually faster in speed, most of them anyways. The reason being is on public trackers you have an umlimited amount of leechers compared to limited amount of seeders. Where as on private trackers there are a lot of seeders compared to the amount of leechers.
As for the MPAA/RIAA, it'd be the same as public trackers I'd like to believe. All the need to do is register at the tracker and they're in.
As for IRC, where abouts in the world are you located? Outside the USA a lot of countries allow you to download, but not upload so IRC would be safe no matter who you're downloading from.

I would agree with everything crespo said especially about the private trackers, except the all IRC being safe thing. IRC is no different to any of the others, they can still track you.
Remember protowall is just one thing you can use to protect yourself and should not be used in isolation to other security products.
There is a wealth of related info on the site / forums once you sign up.

I am referring to the fact that a lot of countries let you download, but do not let you upload. With IRC, unless you get involved you are not uploading so no matter who you download from you're safe because if you're in a country that lets you download there is no worry.
With IRC, it all depends on what country you're from. A country like the USA and it's the same as the other P2P applications. A country like Canada and you're safe so long as you're not uploading through an fserv or your own XDCC server.

Yep but that is more based on the fact that they generally wont prosecute you in those countries as opposed them not being able to trace you!

AFAIK they do not have any jurisdication outside the USA (yet) but that doesn\'t mean that they wont actively assist whoever the local hired guns are that are their equivalent in that country. They will send out violations to international ISP\'s as well as copyright is an international law, albeit enforce differently in many countries.

Thanks for the replies. I actually am registered here, it`s just my paranoidedness (good word huh!), that figured I'd write anonymously. Not that I don't trust the people here at bluetack, again, just my being paranoid.
Anyway, I live in Canada, so we can download music legally, but 'sharing' is still a greyarea. Not sure how it applies to other copyrighted things, such as movies, or games.
I agree about private BT sites going faster, as they are more about sharing, so people seed longer as well. As was essentially said.
I use BT but I don`t use P2P apps anymore, such as Limewire or Winmx. Even though the latter is essentially dead from what I know unless one changes servers or whatever.
'Spose that is about it. One other thing I had been looking into was using Tor (or I2P) with Azureus, although that would be abusing what it was meant for. Anyone else ever tried it with Az, as Az has an option to setup with Tor o some capacity. Alright, thanks again! Later.
