Full Version: Question about Host File!

In the instructions about setting up a host file , you say to copy the updated Host File in the appropriate location Windows XP=C:\Windows\system 32\drivers\etc. I went in that location and I saw that there are the following files: Hosts (1 KB) , ImHosts (5KB) , network (1KB) , protocol (1KB) and services (8KB). I do not know if I must replace anyone of those files with the new Hosts File. Also I saw in the forum that someone had some problems with spybot. How I turn of spybot's host file? I use for my protection Nod32 antivirus , ghostwall , regdefend , counterspy , ewido 3.5 anti-malware , processguard , winpatrol , spywareblaster , spybot , adware Se , Cwsshredder and spoofstick for internet explorer and mozilla firefox. Should I do some adjustments to any of my security systems before using host manager and host file. Forgive my ignorance but I am afraid of possible crashes!
My system is: Windows XP Home SP2 , 1024 MB RAM , Pendium ® 4 , processor 3.00 GHZ.
Best regards!

Hello Kostas,

You must replace / overwrite the existing HOSTS file in C:\Windows\system 32\drivers\etc with the new one. Before installing the HOSTS file make sure to turn off the DNS Client. See this topic for more information :

Spybot : You can't exclude the hosts file from being checked, Spybot will not crash. Just don't delete any entries found by Spybot as they are false positives.

If Counterspy checks the hosts file, you should turn off that option too as it might crash when checking large HOSTS files. WinPatrol is not a problem, Scotty just watches over it and alerts you of a change. If you did replace it, accept the change.

Check out the Bluetack's Hosts Manager too, it can manage your Hosts file if you want. smile.gif
