B.I.S.S. Forums > Malware Research Forum > Malware Removal Support Forum
morphyx
i've been jacking up security for about the last 2-3 weeks. i just switched from ZApro to outpost pro trial. also running pg2. i've been watching HJT scans, eweido, spybot s&d, adaware, spywareblaster, and windows defender.

so, i load up outpost today, update the spy def's, and it found the following:

3:19:41 PM WinAntiVirus Quarantine Malware
3:19:41 PM Remote password stealer Quarantine Keylogger
3:19:41 PM TypeRecorder Quarantine Keylogger
3:19:41 PM Sgrunt Quarantine Dialer
3:19:41 PM Aws Quarantine Adware
3:19:41 PM CmdServs Quarantine Adware
2:36:07 PM WinAntiVirus Object Detected Malware
2:36:07 PM Remote password stealer Object Detected Keylogger
2:36:07 PM TypeRecorder Object Detected Keylogger
2:36:07 PM Sgrunt Object Detected Dialer
2:36:07 PM Aws Object Detected Adware
2:36:07 PM CmdServs Object Detected Adware

also i ran cmd netstat -an and i've got something like 40 ports with established connections that are NOT Azureus! they start with port 139 the range from TCP 1051-1659

i can't believe that i have 40 legit progs that need to keep a connection to the net!?! huh!?

HJT log and eweido tell me nothing!

hello morphyx,

It's very nice of you to post the Outpost log but it does not tell us which file(s) has / have been flagged so it's kinda useless.

As far as the HIJT log ... please post the log so that we can see if all items all legit. I would like to see a staruptlist too please.

Perform :

Run HijackThis, click on Open the Misc Tools Section, put a checkmark in List also minor sections and List empty sections. Click on Generate StartupList log, anwser Yes and copy/paste the content in your reply.
Click Back and Click on Scan. When the scan is finished, click Save Log and paste the content in your reply.
morphyx
thanks for your reply kimberly,...here's the 2 logs: smile.gif

it just found some more...

4:12:21 PM PC Tattletale Quarantine System monitoring
4:12:21 PM LeakTest Quarantine LeakTest
4:12:21 PM Looxee Keylogger Quarantine System monitoring
t think leaktest was a prog i d/l'd to test my firewall.

Leaktest is a firewall test program, and Outpost will quarantine it.
I hope the other two are false positives, because I had the same ones on all my computers. I've found Outpost's anti-spyware to give false positives fairly regularly.
Kimberly
Hello morphyx,

Leaktest is a program indeed to test firewalls. Both lists are clear. I still would like to do you a few things, those findings might be FP's or some leftovers from previous infections.

Rogue program often seen / known as Vundo but I don't see any signs of it in your log. Did you ever had Winantivirus 2005 / 2006 ?

3:19:41 PM CmdServs Quarantine Adware
Makes me think of CmdServ / Command Service but I don't see the service listed in your log, might be a left over in the registry.

Ok, we'll try to dig this a bit deeper. First Make sure that you can see hidden files.
  1. Click Start.
  2. Click My Computer.
  3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  4. Select the View Tab.
  5. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  6. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  7. Click Yes to confirm.
  8. Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types.

I wanna check the presence of some files on your PC. It's a fix for smitfraud infections which you don't have but it has the advantage to scan for a large amount of known other files too.

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip
Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

Download Bobbi Flekman's RegSearch from
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/regsearch.php

Create a folder for RegSearch on the C: drive called C:\RegSearch. You can do this by going to My Computer then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it RegSearch. Extract all the files from the zip archive into that folder.

Open the RegSearch folder and double-click the icon for RegSearch.exe to launch the program.
Copy / Paste the following line into the Search Box:

cmdserv

then hit Ok

After completion Notepad will be opened with all the found instances of the string. The resulting file is saved in the same location as RegSearch.exe.

Kav is great to dig up new rare infected files, so let's give it a try since Outpost did mention a keylogger. If you have one present, Kav will surely see it.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

I hope the other two are false positives, because I had the same ones on all my computers. I've found Outpost's anti-spyware to give false positives fairly regularly.

Both are not detected in the June9, 2006 50008 signature update, so they are almost certainly false positives.

Good luck with the rest!

Yeah, that happens very often with the forum software, to prevent that, one should untick the "Enable emoticons" checkbox before posting a reply. wink.gif

Ok, that looks very good to me, no bad files, no bad entries, and Kav came up clean (except for one quarantained item in Norton Antivirus Quarantaine). You can go to Norton Antivirus > Open up the quarantaine item section and delete all files in there.

Just a small regfix since the Command Service was present at one time on your PC but was disabled from startup through MSConfig.

Copy/paste the following text into a new Notepad document. Make sure that you have one blank line at the end of the document as shown in the quoted text.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\services]
"cmdService"=-

Save it to your desktop as Fixme.reg. Save it as :
File Type: All Files (not as a text document or it wont work).
Name: Fixme.reg

Locate Fixme.reg on your desktop and double-click it. When asked if you want to merge with the registry, click YES. Wait for the merged successfully prompt.

I honestly don't see anything else, if something was really present on the PC it has been cleaned up by the Outpost plugin or it is a small harmless leftover or it is a false positive. Kav didn't even spot files in System Restore ... As far as I'm concerned you have a clean system.

If doing an Outpost scan again, take note of the files / registry entries (if possible of course) that are flagged by it's detection. Btw, if you really want to be sure, you may perform a Panda Online Scan. It does check the registry too but I doubt you will get any positive results tho.

Run Panda's ActiveScan and perform a full system scan.
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button.
  • A new window will open...click the big Check Now button.
  • Enter your Country.
  • Enter your State/Province.
  • Enter your e-mail address.
  • Select either Home User or Company.
  • Click the big Scan Now button.
  • Allow the ActiveX component to install and download the files required for the scan. This may take a couple of minutes.
  • Click on Local Disks to start the scan.
Upon scan completion, if anything malicious is detected, click See Report, then click Save Report and save it to your Desktop.

Please let us know how things evoluate.

thank you very much kimberly for walking me through that. the only concern i have is....if they were false positives? what did outpost actually quarentine? should i hang on to these files for some reason or select delete? i can't see keeping them because if a particular file was necesary, how would i know which one to un-quarentine?

what do you think?
Kimberly
Hello morphyx,

You're welcome. smile.gif

You did post a snipit, but what you did post does not give paths to the files or the registry entries. I never used Oustpost so I can tell you how it's quarantaine section is constructed and what info is available.

Now I did some more digging and it looks like Outpost did delete valid items. Items that are keyloggers but that are installed by your boss, parents, ... e.g. deliberately installed to watch activity on the PC.
Funniest thing is that I don't see any of these items to startup at boot at all, which could mean that other programs already did delete a part of it or that Outpost really did remove all entries.

I'm not really in a position to give you much advice about these legit programs. If you or someone else of your familly did install them, you might wanna get them out of quarantaine and notify Outpost staff of their detection.

Probably legit programs

4:12:21 PM PC Tattletale Quarantine System monitoring
Parental Control Software - http://www.familyfirst.com/pc_tattletale.html

4:12:21 PM LeakTest Quarantine LeakTest
Firewall Test

possible legit ?

http://www.sunbelt-software.com/research/t...&threatid=29125
http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data...are.looxee.html
This program is a keylogger but could be installed deliberately as it falls into the commercial keyloggers I think. Well you have to run an installer yourself to install the program.
http://www.looxee.com

I could as someone at Sunbelt if they consider it as a legit - commercial keylogger if you want.

3:19:41 PM TypeRecorder Quarantine Keylogger
http://www.rampellsoft.com/products/typerecorder.shtml
TypeRecorder records everything that you type on your computer. ... TypeRecorder is also helpful in monitoring unauthorized use of your computer, ...

or

Hard to know without filename .... but I doubt that malware will install keyloggers that need to be bought to be functionnal.

3:19:41 PM Remote password stealer Quarantine Keylogger
Maybe this app ?

bad entries

3:19:41 PM Sgrunt Quarantine Dialer
Bad but see topic here:

Can you get a screenshot of the quarantained items if they show more information than you did post ?
You can upload it here : http://www.imageshack.us/

Did you install some of these programs I did mention as legit or possible legit .... Or maybe your parents ?
Knowing filenames would be a great help in investigating this.

Hmm, maybe we could find out a few items :

Run HijackThis, click on Open the Misc Tools Section, click on Open Uninstall Manager. Click on Save List and save uninstall_list.txt to your Desktop. Open this file in Notepad and copy/paste the content in your reply.
