I use Trend Micro PC-illin and it keeps blocking some sort of "thing". When I checked the PC-illin log file it shows this:

C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\?PPPATCH\L?GONUI.EXE

Also, here is my hi-jack this file if it helps. What the heck is this?? If I turn of the security feature on PC-illin I get screensaver pop-ups and such. Seems like IE is jacked.

Can someone please help me remove?

Thanks:

Hello Gesundheit,

The file you are refering to is PurityScan, it comes bundled with different products, the ocx from Yazzle is one of them. You've got a few other nasties on board too that's why IE has been hijacked. I'm looking over your log and will post a fix in a few.

Please only follow advice of the people that are authorised to post in this section as outlined in this sticky.

Thanks very much !

Hopefully I can get rid of this stuff finally. I'm not a big fan of reformatting.

Ges.
Kimberly
Ok, here we go. smile.gif

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip
Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.
______________________________

Download PurityScan uninstaller to your Desktop.
http://www.outerinfo.com/OiUninstaller.exe
(Yes it's ok - allow the download if something blocks it.)
______________________________

Click on Start, Control Panel, click on Add/Remove Programs
Look through the installed programs for the following items and remove them if present:

Cowabanga by OIN
YazzleActiveX By OIN

During the uninstall process, you might be presented with several prompts to guide you through uninstalling the product. Read these carefully to make sure you are actually choosing to uninstall rather than keep the software. Reboot the PC to complete removal.
______________________________

Run the PurityScan uninstaller. Follow the prompts for removal and reboot in Safe Mode when done.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

Run HijackThis, click on None of the above, just start the program, click on Scan. Put a check in the box on the left side of the following items if still present:

Using Windows Explorer, Search and Delete these Folders if listed:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\?ppPatch
C:\Program Files\WNSXS~1 <-- Foldername starts with WNSXS and will contain other letters. In the folder you will find the file named spoolsv.exe

Note about the ? in the folders

The ? in the foldername has one or more letters changed to identical-looking Unicode Cyrillic characters. For example, the Cyrillic character 'es' is used in place of the Latin 'c', which looks identical and Windows will recognise it as a 'c' on a standard machine.

Using Windows Explorer, Search and Delete these Files if listed:

C:\WINNT\system32\attrib.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\winsfd32.dll

Navigate to C:\WINNT\Temp

Note : you will see a lot of random files named :

C:\WINNT\Temp\win53D.tmp or C:\WINNT\Temp\win53F.tmp.exe

Make sure you delete them all. If you can't delete them let me know.

Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp
Click Edit, click Select All, press the DELETE key, and then click Yes to confirm that you want to send all the items to the Recycle Bin.

No worries Ges, I'll be around. smile.gif

Can you perform this too please, I want to see the winlogon key.

Download WinPFind.zip to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/winpfind.php
Extract it to your C:\ folder. This will create a folder called WinPFind in the C:\ folder.
Open the C:\WinPFind folder and double-click on WinPFind.exe.
Click on Configure Scan Options.
Remove all the checkmarks under Folder Options on the left side by clicking the button Remove All, uncheck Run Addon's and click Apply.
Click on the Start Scan button and wait for it to finish.

Please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log file named C:\WinPFind\WinPFind.txt. Please copy that log into your next reply.

Hello Ges,

Looking very good, just a few details to fix. smile.gif

Copy/paste the following text into a new Notepad document. Make sure that you have one blank line at the end of the document as shown in the quoted text.

Save it to your desktop as Fixme.reg. Save it as :
File Type: All Files (not as a text document or it wont work).
Name: Fixme.reg

Locate Fixme.reg on your desktop and double-click it. When asked if you want to merge with the registry, click YES. Wait for the merged successfully prompt.

Download Killbox by Option^Explicit to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder.
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip
Unzip it to your desktop or a convenient folder.

Double-click Killbox.exe to run it.

First click on Tools > Delete Temp Files

A box will open with a list of all user profiles.

Check the following boxes at a minimum for each profile by clicking on the drop down arrow and checking the boxes that are enabled. Some will not apply and those boxes will not be available to check. Make sure you do this for all the profiles listed.

Temporary Internet Files
Temp Files

If you want to clean your cookies, history, and list of recent files run you may check those boxes as well.

Then Click on the Button titled "Delete Selected Temp Files"

Do the next profile until you have cleaned all the profiles in the list.

Exit by clicking the Button titled "Exit(Save Settings)"

Once back into the main killbox program you will be entering items into Pocket KillBox. Please select the “Delete on Reboot” Option. Enter or Copy&Paste each of the following into the box one by one, making sure Delete on Reboot is Checked for each entry. Click the Red X for each entry, but DO NOT Allow your machine to be Rebooted until the last item has been entered:
** Note: For the .dlls, check the Unregister .dll Before Deleting box as well.

Update your Spybot defs and run a full scan.

Run Spybot - S&D

Click the button Check for Problems
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing RED entries, BLACK entries and GREEN entries in the window.
Make sure that there is a check mark beside all of the RED entries ONLY.
Choose Fix Selected Problems and allow Spybot to fix the RED entries.

If it has trouble removing any spyware, you will get a message window, asking if it would be ok to run Spybot - S&D on the next reboot before any other applications start running. You should reply Yes to this. The next time you start Windows, Spybot will run automatically and fix any of the programs it could not fix previously.

At this point you will be presented with the list of found entries again, but now there will be large green checkmarks next to the items that Spybot - S&D was able to remove. The ones that are still checked but do not have the large green checkmark next to them will be fixed on the next reboot of windows.

Let me know if you still have problems and how the PC behaves now.

Just a small additional task ... cool.gif

Run HijackThis, click on None of the above, just start the program, click on Scan. Put a check in the box on the left side of the following items if still present:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\windows\system32\blank.htm
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\windows\system32\blank.htm

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click Fix Checked

Please post a fresh HijackThis log.

Ok Kim,

Updated and ran spybot - no threats were found !

Did the hijackthis thing again and deleted those two items. I think I'm clear. I haven't had any pop-ups or anything unusual since we began.

Question. I an running Ad-aware (free version), and Spy bot. Is there anything you would recommend that I add to protect myself better? I'm also using a full version of PC'illin which has quite a bit of security as well. (or seems to anyways) smile.gif

Hello Richard,

You're welcome, glad we managed to fix your problems. I very seldom pronounce the word "format" if it is possible to recover a system and yours was rather clean compared to some others I ran into. wink.gif

Question. I an running Ad-aware (free version), and Spy bot. Is there anything you would recommend that I add to protect myself better? I'm also using a full version of PC'illin which has quite a bit of security as well. (or seems to anyways)
I see that you are running SpywareGuard and that's a very good program to prevent BHO's from installing themselves (the O2 lines in HijackThis). Ad-Aware & Spybot are more scanning tools, they don't really ofter a real-time protection. PC'illin is ok, nowadays there isn't a single AV that can hold every thread out on the internet. Below is a list of programs that might help you / offer additional protection but the first step is to keep your system up to date and update your AV protection very often. Your Sun Java needs an update too, see below on how to perform that. My personal choice goes to ProcessGuard but it is not always easy to configure the program as it should be but it really offers a high level of protection without using a lot of ressources. Keep in mind none of the programs below replace an antivirus and / or a firewall.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Windows, Internet Explorer and Microsoft Office Updates

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site frequently. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any application of it, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed.

If you have trouble with Windows Update, you still can get all the Critical Updates, Security Fixes and Service Packs. Below are a few links to bookmark.

Keep your Sun Java up to date

The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 5.0 Update 7

To check if you have the latest version installed and get the needed updates, please go to the link below:
http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_automatic.jsp
You'll need to use IE and allow ActiveX for this update. Follow the instructions on that page to check your Java Software.

Or you can get the manual download here:
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Check in your Control Panel, under Add/Remove programs and uninstall ALL older versions of Sun Java. And in the future, remember to remove older versions of Java when you automatically update to a newer version to avoid exploitation of older versions left on your system.

Free programs that may help you in keeping the PC clean
  • SpywareBlaster
SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
    You can download SpywareBlaster here
A tutorial can be found here
  • SpywareGuard
It provides a degree of real-time protection solution against spyware that is a great addition to SpywareBlaster's protection method. An anti-virus program scans files before you open them and prevents execution if a virus is detected - SpywareGuard does the same thing, but for spyware. And you can easily have an anti-virus program running alongside SpywareGuard. It also features Download Protection and Browser Hijacking Protection.
    You can download SpywareGuard here
A tutorial can be found here
  • IE-SPYAD
IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone, so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all. It basically prevents any downloads, cookies, scripts from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
    You can download IE-SPYAD here
A tutorial can be found here
  • Hosts File
A Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad, spyware sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
A tutorial tutorial can be found here
    • MVPS Hosts File
You can download the MVPS Hosts File here
Furthermore the website contains useful tips and links to other resources and utilities.
    • Bluetack's Hosts File and Hosts Manager
Essentially based on the research made by Webhelper, Andrew Clover and Eric L. Howes, it contains most if not all the known spyware sites, sites responsible for hijacks, rogue apllications etc...
      Download Bluetack's Hosts file here
      Download Bluetack's HostsManager here
Free Spyware Detection and Removal Programs
  • Ad-Aware
It scans for known spyware on your computer. These scans should be run at least once every two weeks.

  • Spybot - Search & Destroy
It scans for spyware and other malicious programs. Spybot has preventitive tools that stop programs from even installing on your computer.

  • Dialers
Security against all kinds of dialers. No fear when receiving the next phone bill.
  • Trojans and Keyloggers
No chance for thieves to steal your bank data and personal sensitive information by tapped Internet connections, remote controlled webcams or secret keyboard recordings.
Most of you will have already the trial version of this software, which is an excellent program and particularly good at catching trojans. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge. You'll be removing dangerous new programs while others download new reference files.
  • Detect & Neutralize Spyware.
  • Detect & Neutralize ADware.
  • Detect & Neutralize Viral infections.
  • Detect & Neutralize Unwanted IE Add-Ons.
  • Detect & Restore File Type Changes.

  • Avoid Start Page Hijacking.
  • Detect changes to HOSTS & critical system files.
  • Kill Multiple Tasks that replicate each other, in a single step!

SiteHound by Firetrust

Firetrust introduces the SiteHound Toolbar - the safe way to browse the Internet. With SiteHound, when you browse the Internet, you're shown a warning page every time you go to a site which is a known scam, potentially loads viruses or spyware on to your computer, has questionable content or anything you would not consider reasonable. You are shown a warning page with information about that site. From there you can choose to enter the site or go back. SiteHound is a free add-on to Internet Explorer. (Users of Firefox - a version for you is coming soon.) SiteHound's comprehensive database gathers the knowledge from other users and respected experts from the online security community to tell you which sites are real and which are bogus.

SiteHound will alert you when you enter a site which is known to contain:
  • Fraudulent claims or scams
  • Offensive material
  • Security vulnerabilities
  • Spyware or Adware
  • Spam related material
  • or other content deemed to be unsafe
Specifically, SiteHound blocks these categories:

• Adult • Spyware • Spam Advertising • Phishing • Possible scam or fraud • Misleading or False Advertising

Use an AntiVirus Software

It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See the link below for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs.
Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?p=53#53

Update your Anti Virus Software

It is imperative that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall

I can not stress enough how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below.

Hi Kim,

I just picked up spyware guard yesterday or the day before and the definitions date is 1/22/04. Version 2.2

Does this seem right to you? It sayd my definitions are up to date.. I'm a bit confused.

Thanks again

Hello Richard

Yes it is correct. SpywareGuard is based on heuristic detection mainly so it doesn't need specific signatures for every thread it catches. New types of spyware might bypass it but it is still a good layer of protection. Spywareguard is very often the first program (if you have several running) that catches a new BHO when that type of spyware is being installed on your system.

Hi Kim

I'm back - I'm not 100% sure we got it all. I just want to be sure that it's all clean. I had a few pop up's today so I want to double check.

Can you please check this hi-jack file and see if anything is unusual. My PC'illin now won't update/// maybe it's just a bad server, but let me know if you see anything out of place.

Thanks again.

Hello Richard,

I don't see anything unsual in your log, what kind of popups do you get ? Do they mention a name, a website ?

Can you run a KAV scan and post the log please ? You may save it as a text file and post it here instead of saving it as a html file.

Next, Download Blacklight Beta from here:
http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/try.shtml
  • Hit I accept. It will take you to download page.
  • Download blbeta.exe and save it to the Desktop.
  • Once saved... move blbeta.exe to C:\ - Local Disk ©
You can do this by going to My Computer then double click on C:.
Locate blbeta.exe and right click on it, select cut, right click an empty space in the folder you just did open and select paste.
  • Click Start, then Run and paste the following in the edit box : C:\blbeta.exe /expert and hit Enter (or click Ok)
  • Click accept agreement and Click scan
This app too may fire off a warning from antivirus. Let the driver load.
    Wait for it to finish.
  • If it displays any items...don't do anything with them yet. Just hit exit (close)
  • It will drop a log on the Desktop or in the C:\ folder that starts with fsbl....big number.
    Please post contents of log.
Take your time, it's rather late here so I'll check your logs tomorrow. smile.gif
