yep. hopefully once I get the 20 Megabyte HOSTS merged into the HOSTS on this site, Ill then be able to use Aldo's HOSTS Manager to merge the HOSTS files easily

Aldo let me in on a lil secret Due to coding limitations, the HOSTS Manager will only hold like 65k lines of host names...so I gotta get the big HOSTS file pounded down to a smaller size, then Ill go back and hunt for more updated HOSTS files.

Neo mentioned something about making some sort of HOSTS Editor...hmm, I wonder if there is any way to code around this 65k limit? It's kinda shitty heh.

ok. ill get out another update lol. I found a way to get rid of duplicates using UltraEdit So now I just gotta quit being lazy! lol.

and then share your info on using UE and the dupes removal please , i dont use it enough to be able to use it properly lol, im too lazy to look.

Ok, its quick and simple load up the HOSTS file in UE, goto File Menu, Sort/Advanced Sort, in there, you can tell it how to sort it, Asc., Desc., Number Sort, remove duplicates, etc. Im kinda leary on using the remove duplicates, cause I dont know if it will compare the whole line to the other "whole lines" or what. I dont what it chopping of ad.doubleclick and turning them all to doubleclick.net for example But, the sort asc/desc. alone is a big help, because it will sort the dupes all together for easy highlight and deletion

Im also not sure how it treats the # commented lines. Earlier this morning when I tried it, it put a bunch of blank returns it looked like at the top of the HOSTS file that I deleted, so Im not sure where those came from.

well i didnt like the UE way of sorting things, so im using this instead, it automatically sorts and clears the duplicates , adds all new hostnames in alphabetical order and tells you if its already in the hosts file , and it has hoststoggle built in , and doesnt need to be installed , just extracted to its own direcrtory.. best thing ive used so far , a bit better than aldos tool, you can also create a .reg file to add all your hosts entries to the restricted zone of internet explorer ..

hostess works ok , but its not removing the duplicates as i hoped it would , probably because of some of the commented lines i have already , theres a new HOSTS file editor made by Toadbee from gladiator anti virus forum that im going to post in the security tools section it is very cool and worth a look at , free of course.

Hey, Moore, I made a HOSTS file updater. I will be releasing it with my next version of Supertrick XG so people won't really have to download and install new versions all the time if all they care about is the HOSTS file. If you like it, maybe it should be included in the programs section.

The cool thing is, it's not a program. I made it out of a setup script. It doesn't include an uninstaller because it only pertains to the HOSTS file (and the SXG uninstaller will undo those changes), but it can have whatever BISS wants.
I'm going to work with the script a bit more to see if i can perhaps make it a bit more configurable, but it doesn't really have to be if it's going to be just r00ted's HOSTS file. Right now, it's reeeeaaly easy to use and only requires an internet connection. I'll post some screencaps when I get home... that is if you're interested.

Okay, you know what my setups look like. This is the unique page. It shows the process of what you'r downloading and when it's done it automatically moves to the next part of the setup. For mine, it will download a compressed HOSTS file (currently in zip format... will probably change that later) unzip it and begin merging the HOSTS files. So what cha think?
