I have peer guardian 2, but recently the website has become unaccessible. I also cannot update Peer Guardian 2, it doesn't find the update servers and just freezes up. So I decided I should use Protowall too. Nothing wrong with more spyware blocking/IP blocking/whatever else it does. However I can't get it running. I read up all over about the ProtoWall.sys error, but the FAQ to fix it does not work. Here's what I have been doing:

First I installed Protowall, and used the "automatic installation" of the drivers option.
It installed but wouldn't run. Then I get the infamous error with Protowall. The error is:
Protowall Driver is not loaded.
Uninstall the driver from Network Adaptor,
Reinstall it from the install Directory
then reload the application.

I tried following the ProtoWall.sys error FAQ, and I did what it says but I still get the same error as above when I try to run it. Can anyone help me get ProtoWall up and running? (Note:I'm a noob at this stuff, but would like to have PG2+ProtoWall for maximum protection. I also just used the List 1 you guys have and added it with PG2, those lists do work with PG2 right?)

As I got ProtoWall installed there was one last error: Couldn't allocate Port 27015.

I then selected my ethernet so it could start working.
When I run ProtoWall now it doesn't seem to be blocking anything. There's no real options that I can see...

Why isn't it blocking anything. It says that it loaded up pwconns.log

(Note: I'm running PG2 at the same time. Would PG2 always get to block it first?)

please take a look at the protowall install video, It does not appear that you have finished installing protowall or setting up the .p2p file from the "W" on the upper left.

let us know

There is an .avi download of the video on the frontpage for those with firefox and the flash does not work for you.

Thanks for showing me this video, it seems to be working correctly now- however: When I got to the clicking "continue installation" 7 times thing right after I did the 7th and final one - I got an error, "Server port 27015 couldn't be allocated". Despite this error it seems to be working, and blocking "some" things. When I did the website test with r*aa.org it did not block it. Is my p2p list (the one it comes with) old? It says there are 685,105,082 known IPs 98602 ranges. Why did I fail the block test? (and how do I fix it)

I have never seen that error before It may be a permissions thing, not sure.

Yes, the ipfiler.p2p that comes with protowall is very old. To update the Ipfilter.p2p you will need to download the list or lists you want to use. We have the blocklist manager for that or you can just download the level1.zip and use that by replacing the contents of the .zip into the .p2p file and update it with just that list.

Alright, seems that did it. Now it's working fine. I've got:733482814 known IPs in 122333 ranges. Much better! laugh.gif

Anything else I should have with PG2, and ProtoWall? More can never be bad. smile.gif

Also... whatever happened to PeerGuardian. There website vanished, and PG2 won't update anymore. I used the Level1 list on it that I put into ProtoWall, since I couldn't update PG2 anymore. When I try to update it, it just fails to contact them.

Also I noticed PG2 says that it's blocking 955966315 IPs. That seems to be alot more than ProtoWall, but PG2 doesn't have any "p2p" files.

What should I do to make sure ProtoWall, and PG2 stay updated maximally?

More can be bad atm when our main server is down. If you have updated protowall with blm and have all the lists you need please only update once, have pg2 use the ipfilter.p2p that protowall uses and do not update in PG2 because the lists they use are just our lists. They redirect to us.

Phoenixlabs.org is having server problems now for a while, I hope they can get back up soon to tell peeps of our server problem.

If pg2 has more ip's than protowall you are using maybe our spyware lists etc in it, you could get them by using blocklist manager.

hope this helps
