Hmm! Phoenix Labs must have suffered from the same problem. I've been a regular member over there since it's existence & before with Methlabs. I haven't had the time to visit there as much as earlier in the year. I still visit & respond to threads but not like I once was. I didn't know they had a possible problem but it appears that the site's been closed ot at least a temporary shutdown. I've donated to PG program on more than one occasion but I didn't realize there might be a problem in closing the site like that's been discussed here. Does anyone know what's the case with Phoenix Labs because I know a lot here at BISS are members over there as well? Thanks guys! huh.gif

They should back up soon. Would not hurt to make a donation

I've just donated $20 (about 10 quid) dont die on us! ohmy.gif I've donated a number of times but not recently. I wouldnt mind ads at all on this site, every little helps wink.gif How about an ED2k hash every week or so for the lists for those of us who use emule or similar? It might lighten the load a little from your site bandwidth? biggrin.gif
nowshining
why not every 3rd month or 2nd month shut the whole site down for about maybe a couple of months and do the work on ur home computers and re-upload the updated files when u get back up and running. smile.gif..Combine that with Ads I guess...

OR

Require a Quarter or DOLLAR for the subscription service or maybe even less maybe a penny for each blocklist download, but I prob. say and suggest a Quarter and have the link active for like 24hours or 12 and let people pay by CC, paypal, etc.. smile.gif or combine ads, shutting down for a bit, and the amount for the subscription service all in one...well the paying for 12/24 download link or with the subscription service U could limit the bandwidth to non-registers WHOLLY blocked banned and when that bandwidth gets used up for everyone re-direct to a login page and for each register login either do it FREE still or require some chunk change such as a dime, etc.. smile.gif tongue.gif

edit: okay I hope everyone gets what I am trying to say in the end.. smile.gif as I was just THROWINg out suggestions in there in one swoop...

edit2: or even have each person pay for SOOO many posts or add it to the other plans in advance and then block em' out, example u could charge a penny or a dime for them. So lets say u charge a nickel, then in advance a person would have to pay for to post TWO posts a dime, then require more money to continue posting...

dry.gif Hmm, wouldn't the big torrent and ed2k link sites like to mirror the lists. Saugstube.to, Bitreactor.to and much more are offering loads of torrents and some are even offering premerged ipfilter.dat files for eMule, µtorrent, Bitcomet, so they should also be able to mirror Level1, Level2, Hijacked ... . And what about power-portal.to. The Release Crew must have loads of bandwidth available according to what happens if i catch a release in the very release night and what should be wrong with getting the Blocklists from that russian ip ranges?

Since the built in BLM of PG2 and the Bluetack BLM are not able to auto Update from Torrent Network and the Safepeer plugin for Azureus updates every time Azureus is startet i see no chance to minimize traffic by offering torrent downloads.

For Bluetack and Phoenixlabs it should be first priority to get Pw and Pg2 ready for Vista and keep the lists up to date while the big torrent and eMule sites should spread the lists.

Advertising on BISS? Well i don't think that there are enough clicks per day. People update their Ip-filters and search for new stuff at a regulary timebase, but they don't visit the site the lists come from dayly.

I have only recently joined the forum, but I have been using the blocklist for a while. I have donated twice anonymously and I would be happy to have a donation standing order with Paypal.
For now, I am sending a donation and I hope this helps with your good work.

Quick question.. Is the donation meter broke or have a limit? I am asking because I check up see how the donations are going every once and a while. When I checked a few days ago, m8h donated $22.12. Now their has been a couple hundred in donations since his donation, and the meter is still showing February with about the same amount of money donated ($175 or so) from when m8h donated.

So is there a limit on how far in advance the meter goes? Or is it just me not reading things right.

Later - SD-87

P.S. I'm trying to get some money up and put in the bank to donate one day. Sorry I have not donated yet. No job and full time college student. But I'll work up some money soon I hope.
Tozzano
SD-87 yep you're right. The donation meter is being worked on right now. The correct amount and month will be set when the automation gets finished. We may even move from the donation meter only to a subscription service as well. Stay tuned... read.gif

However, anyone donating now gets their membership upgraded and their name posted on the list (if a member and logged in when donating)

Thanks to all for the donations and those who are supporting the site in other ways as well. cool.gif
ironiridis
Wait, what? You're way ahead in donations, so you're moving to subscription now? I guess I don't mind, since I don't have a problem paying for these lists. But will they still be available for free? In what capacity? mda.gif

<snip>...We may even move from the donation meter only to a subscription service as well. Stay tuned...

In better words, we may/we might possibly move from having ONLY a donation meter - to having a subscription service ALSO. The details and the content of the potential service has barely been discussed.

We are ahead now in donations, and it is appreciated. This is the first time we've been ahead enough to perhaps use some of the 'future funds' for site improvement, software development, and/or donations to other causes on behalf of our community, etc. Right now, the monthly amount of 270 barely covers the server cost, whois fees, and forum license. Maybe the subscription service could include enhanced list detail and/or updates available more often and automated for example...

Sorry if you misunderstood. Again, nothing much has been discussed, much less decided, and suggestions are always welcome.

I hope that explains my ramblings better. biggrin.gif

I just tried donating with CC but it took me to a page saying I could pay by paypal if I logged in. I went back & tried again but again it took me to PayPal message! I hope the donation went through anyway but may I suggest that you NOT make that a mandatory link. Let it give you the option to continue with chosen method or paypal. I don't have password written down here so I can't use paypal at this moment. Hope all is well & hope you have a safe holiday!

ALSO, I tried updating my blocklist manager & it said the auto method had an error (Error encountered during processing. Auto Export Aborted.
:: Processing cancelled.
), so I exported/updated list manually. Afterward, I noticed I had less IP#s & fewer ranges than B4 I tried to update. Does that mean I did something wrong or do fewer #s just mean you delete old IP#s etc?

Thanks Again,

Try this: Once at the donation page, http://www.bluetack.co.uk/donate/index.php, select the button for the currency you wish to use. When the Paypal page comes up, fill in the amount you wish to donate then click the "Update Totals" button.

Next, instead of using the "Login to Paypal" box, find this "continue" link and click it:

Bluetack,

Unfortunately money is pretty tight right now, but I would LOVE to help support you by offering my site as a mirror. I am not sure who to speak to, but if someone could PM me or e-mail me (bob777fred@gmail.com) with the name of person I need to talk to, that would be awesome. I love what Bluetack does and the programs/lists it provides. If there's any way I could help in hosting some files for download, or even another forum, whatever would work, PLEASE let me know!

Thanks!
Brad

I would be happy to pay a yearly subscription fee of about twenty to thirty five dollars. I will see what I can do about sending you something for this great service that has saved me more times than I can count.

Just donated I donate everything left in my Paypal acc was the only money I had if I had come to this site when I first started using blocklists I would have donated earlier very sorry I am low income and depend on blocklists for very apparent reasons keep it up, and as I can afford being a single Dad I will donate thanx for the great lists.
BrAnDoN045
Actually thought about not donating, because of all the trouble getting a blocklist..(I still can't get access to torrent tracker) hopefully this gets fixed. However, tis the holidays so I buckled down and found that cost of one less bag of chew, and one less 20 pack of beer this month will not hurt me too much.

Tis the Season.

i would really really love to donate but iam in south africa and i dont have a credit card so i would have to use a internet bank transfer and well paypal dont like our banks or atleast dont have them on there site for me to do so.

Who can I contact for information on mirroring the lists?

To save bandwidth is there not a more efficient way to host the blocklists. I mean, the majority of the time the users are downloading duplicates of what they already have on there computers with a few minor differences.

What if the blocklists where stored in a MySQL database, but rather than storing the current blocklist you stored the modifications. e.g December 26th could have 5 records, 4 new ranges and 1 range removal.

You would have to make some kind of sync tool to accompany the database. Then the user could update by using the snyc tool which would submit the current date on his/her blocklist. A query of the database could return all the modifications done since that date. A small file is downloaded and then the sync tool on the users computer does adjustments in the file.

You would have to make a way of new users getting the most up to date blocklist so that they don't have loads of updates to download. I guess the easiest way would be if the the sync tool doesn't have a blocklist it submits a blank date and receives a url for the full, current blocklist in return.

Sure it would take some time to set up.... but it would cut your bandwidth dramatically. Infact the updates would be so small there would be no reason why you couldn't use a system similar to an rss feed and the updates be almost live.

In the short term you could limit the time periods in which users update their lists by ip address.... Maybe donators IP address's could be in an exempt list.
Scooty
A small improvement would be to check which lists on the server had been updated. This would stop the paranoids from updating their blocklist every day and on the other hand there would be no need to load i.e. the iana lists everytime.

The best way to decrease traffic would be to use incremental list-updates (like virus-scanners do), but this would mean many sleepless weekends for the developers ( dry.gif ), incompatibility with other blocklistsystems and much work with creating the updates. huh.gif

I have a website but I use no where near the amount of space/ bandwidth I have. If you need me to mirror email me and potentially walk me through setting it up. I'm kind of a noob.

I have access to a large amount of bandwidth and could probably host a few of your files but reliability could be an issue do you have a round-robin system in place so that bandwidth can be shared between several mirrors? (see clamav's updating website for an example) it should be pretty simple i could code it myself... pm me

I got these errors downloading Level1 today:
:: Error in PG: File Line#: 6, Line Contents: You don't have permission to access /config/level1.txt
:: Error in PG: File Line#: 8, Line Contents: <P>Additionally, a 404 Not Found

Is there a new limitation on downloading?

Keep up the good work btw. Didn't know you were behind as I seldom visit the forum pages.
hackattack142
No, that just indicates that your connection timed out. The list is being hosted through a special network (Coral Cache) and, as a result, sometimes you may get stuck with a slow server. I would try again or wait a day or two and try again.

I sent some. Stay alive, for P2P's sake!

He's hit the nail on the head, hasn't he. I had the same thought when using hostman, it doesnt d/l host files everytime, when your hosts are up to date. Surely you should have the same approach as this? Not only to save your bandwidth but also saving the users b/w and time!

And speaking of users b/w, aren't some of the sig pics stupidly large on these forums, like Rich227's sig for eg.
Moore
Yes a more efficient system for downloading the lists would help with the bandwidth a lot.

The lists are already stored and maintained through a sql/php administration update system, which was originally planned to be capable of a whole lot more than it currently does, and it already has almost everything and the kitchen sink built in.

We are always looking out for ideas and things we can use to improve the system, implementing them will probably take a while though.

I will start a new thread so people can share their thoughts on what we might be able to do for a new improved system.
