Hi all,
I recently got an email from my cable company saying that I'm being monitored and warned for copyright infringement or something. Basically, they told me to stop downloading stuff. I use frostwire and bittorrent, thats about it. Has anyone ever gotten this before? Are they really monitoring my computer? I have PeerGuardian 2, and recently forgot to turn it on for all my downloads. Will using PG2 be sufficient enough to stop these guys from snooping around on my computer? My internet provider is Charter Communications. Help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

I will leave it to the experts to answer your questions. Meanwhile, I wouldn't do any p2p for now... sad.gif

Thanks for the reply. That certainly explains why I got that email. I still wonder if using PeerGuardian will prevent that. I think it's because I forget to turn it on sometimes. Hmm... sad.gif

Not that I doubt but may I suggest you doublecheck the mail headers & origin.
Back in September such a misleading warning was being distributed by email but it did contain a rootkit.

If they didn't send you a copyright violation with this warning email then it could be fake or your ISP just doesn't forward those notices. Maybe it was just that your p2p traffic is really high and they were able to spot your download activity.. Hard to say.

I doubt they have time to sit around monitoring all what you are doing along with everyone else..

Lots of people have gotten letters forwarded to them by their ISP for copyright violations etc .. you haven't really given any example of what you recieved for people to know if they have got the same warning as you.

Unlikely, but you never know. The way it usually works is that the copyright holder hires enforcers or digital hitmen [ baytsp / media sentry etc ] to monitor their files or pump out decoys so they can get your IP address and then forward a warning off to your ISP.

An IP blocker can only be as good as the IP's on it's blocklist. There is no 100% guarantee that you can block everything. Using BitTorrent also makes your possible identification a lot easier and a blocklist cannot protect you from that.

farout here. iv received 2 warnings lately.one over downloading "movie A" and the 2nd one last night with the same over "another movie." i removed both off my p.c. is their some protection for such an invasion of privatesy. the second one really bothered me as i pay for the loss of bandwith. i did not have the movie yet. it was downloading at 83% .it really bothers me. this world is getting worst every year. you cannot do a thing without some big company knowing about it. who was i harming. for my personal use. the big ones made 5 billion worldwide off of one movie the black knight. i do this to help my grief or keep my mind off of the issue of losing my partner of 41 years. my wife left this world a year ago this jan.25 2009 it seems like yesterday. i downloaded the level 1 and opened it. is that some protection? where do i see it in action on my p.c.? is that good enouph? im new to these issues. any help would be appreciated. farout

Specific titles removed to avoid issues with rights holders. -CF

Farout please don't post specific movies you are downloading, we don't need or want that kind of information here.

Just downloading and opening the level 1 list won't give you any protection at all.

You need to load it into an IP blocker [ Peerguardian 2 or Protowall ] or a Firewall [ Outpost Firewall or Online Armor ]

Thanks for the edit CF wink.gif

For new movies use a network that doesn't force you to share in order to download. That will
immediately stop them from seeing your downloads in progress. That rules out all the "torrent"
programs right away.

For example, in LimeWire, BearShare and Shareaza you can turn off the feature called "Partial File
Sharing" which starts sharing blocks of files while you are still downloading them. You can also
stop them from sharing your completed downloads folder for even greater security.

For LimeWire, go here & get the Hostiles list & put it in your program.

For eMule, uTorrent, & Vuze, turn on ipblocking & Encryption (For eMule. put a checkmark in 'Filter Servers'). You can put the Bluetack Level 1 list into eMule, & you can put all the lists from Bluetack that you want in uTorrent or Vuze. eMule appears to have a LIMIT on its blocklist size that is very small, but level 1 is working just fine with it so far.

If it was really your isp they would of sent the message by redirecting anything on port 80 (websites) until you read and accepted clicked I understand or something of the sort.

Even then its an empty threat.
Aaron.Walkhouse
Few ISPs do that. The mechanism involved (proxying port 80) is a typical
tool of ISPs that are already censoring heavily, such as in China, Iran,
Bahrain and places like that.

If your ISP is doing things like that and you aren't in one of the notorious
censorship states, vote with your wallet and move to another ISP.

you can turn off the feature called "Partial File Sharing" which starts sharing blocks of files while you are still downloading them.

Be advised that turning off partial file sharing in Shareaza won't actually stop it from sharing partial files unless you also disconnect from the eDonkey network. Partial file sharing is hard-coded into eMule clients, there's no way to turn it off, and Shareaza is no exception. Worse, with Shareaza, if the eDonkey network is active, it will also share your partial files over the Gnutella networks. So to stop Shareaza from sharing your partials, you must not only turn off partial file sharing, you must also disconnect from the eDonkey network.

That's a bug. I'll pass it on to the developers.
Which version did that, 2.4.0.0?
shanu
Hey Guys,

Another similar annoying bug, if using G2 only with partial sharing disabled,
starting a download via magnet enables partial sharing of that download,
need to right click > advanced > uncheck "Share file".
I mentioned it a while ago & was pretty much ignored, they seem to like pushing the "share partials" idea.
The Netweasel
Yes, that's the version I'm using -- 2.4.0.0.
