Full Version: P2P Scanners (e.g. B*yT*P) Spoofing IPs

What about spoofing IPs? What about the P2P network scanners, like B*yT*p? Their engineers are smart enough to make software used by routers. They pay for so much bandwidth, would upstream providers care if an anti-P2P company were sending packets into their backbone with spoofed IPs?

In this case, what good is PeerGuardian .. or any other IP blocklist? Couldn't they continue a charade of using known IPs, while the real work is done from spoofed IPs (only using alternative methods when necessary)?

For blocking spammers, blacklists work great. The top-tier backbone providers would crack down on an "enemy" spewing packets with spoofed IPs, but for the RIAA and others, big $$$ translates to turning blind eye. Given enough money, just about anything is possible, and the RIAA's constituents are desparate enough to spend a whole lot of money.

Also, with soo much $$$, couldn't they afford to just change their IPs every few days (hours?)?

"Furthermore, .. it is very common for hackers to disguise their activities by putting RFC 1918 addresses in 'spoofed' packets (see the above discussion about spoofed packets). "

Sounds kinda lame to try and use PeerGuardian or an IP filter/blocklist, if its sooo easy to use fake IP addresses ...

Apparently, if the anti-P2P scanner/monitoring companies are using spoofed IPs, then it is far beyond an average person's skill to know it or track down the originator:
