Why should you bother about protecting your privacy on the internet ?

Well.. The following information can be captured by web logs or scripts when Web surfing is unprotected:

IP Address - A unique identifier of an individual computer.
Network ownership & administration
Operating System & Browser - Reveals which security gaps can be most easily exploited.
Previously visited Web pages (History-Referers)
Form Contents [ eg; your passwords ]
Favorite Sites/Bookmarks lists
Traceroute - Can reveal information about geographical location.
Port Scan - Reveals data in transmission.
Drive Scan - Reveals the contents of the user's hard drive, including software and files.

If you have a password stored in the clipboard for instance [ a simple copy & paste ] a website may be able to grab that from your computer if you don't have that restricted in your browser.

Before we get into using Proxies etc, we should cover some general privacy information.

Every move you make on the internet can be tracked. Everything, including all your emails and anything you post on forums, blogs and websites. Starting with your own ISP, the servers you connect to or used to transmit/transfer your information.

Some things may come back to haunt you later down the track, and many people have had information they posted carelessly, used against them.

You could lose your job or miss out on getting it in the first place, or worse be accused of an internet crime even through someone else's mistake and mis-identification.

In many cases innocent people have been jailed, tortured and most likely murdered with the help of search engines like google and yahoo freely providing personal information to countries where the govt is corrupt or under communist rule, and where speaking the truth is not permitted or just illegal. Money and power is often much more important than doing the right [ humanitarium ] thing and protecting people's privacy rights or freedoms.

The saying "Google is your friend" is not really true. Most if not all search engines certainly wont think twice about selling you out, whether they are required by law or not, even if you have done nothing wrong, and especially if it helps to build up some kind of friendly relationship with a communist govt like China.

Your personal details or online activities could end up in a central database where you can be sure they will never be removed. Depending on your country ISP's may be required by law to store all logs for years so that they can be used as evidence etc.

The first law of protecting your privacy is obviously not to give your personal details away in the first place. If you can, use throw away email accounts which forward mail to your real email acount, certainly never use email addresses which are your real name etc.

Use free services like www.hushmail.com [ There was rumour of the NSA having full access to hushmail, Proxy guardster and Safe-mail.net - http://seclists.org/bugtraq/2008/Jan/0017.html ] or applications like PGP to encrypt your emails to prevent snooping on all your emails.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Carnivore
Carnivore is information-gathering software created by the FBI to combat criminals who utilize the Internet. Carnivore is housed in a computer that connects to your Internet Service Provider's (ISP's) servers and mines all incoming and outgoing mail for information.

The FBI intends to use the software to locate and monitor specific email addresses for evidence of criminal activity. In the process of monitoring any account, Carnivore must sift through all available account information on a given server.

The objection many privacy advocates, legislators, and the general public have with Carnivore is that the net it casts is too wide. The FBI would have the ability to look through the accounts and email of people not suspected or charged with any crime. Further, the public would have no protection or knowledge of unlawful or accidental seizures of account information. Basically, you have to trust the FBI not to invade your privacy.

Hushmail vs Carnivore

Hushmail's security cannot be broken or weakened by this government sponsored snooping software. Hush's security system is a lot like a circuit, when one Hush user communicates with another Hush user, the circuit is complete and the mail they send is completely safe. To anyone other than the sender or the recipient of a Hush message, email appears as a jumble of numbers and letters. It is completely illegible. The only way to decrypt or unscramble Hush messages is by using your passphrase when you open up your Hushmail account. Carnivore cannot decrypt your mail, and is therefore, powerless against messages sent between Hush users.
A United Nations agency is quietly drafting technical standards, proposed by the Chinese government, to define methods of tracing the original source of Internet communications and potentially curbing the ability of users to remain anonymous.

The U.S. National Security Agency is also participating in the "IP Traceback" drafting group, named Q6/17, which is meeting next week in Geneva to work on the traceback proposal. Members of Q6/17 have declined to release key documents, and meetings are closed to the public.

The potential for eroding Internet users' right to remain anonymous, which is protected by law in the United States and recognized in international law by groups such as the Council of Europe, has alarmed some technologists and privacy advocates. Also affected may be services such as the Tor anonymizing network.
Privacy Online
Concerns about privacy have been existing for a long time. However Internet makes them much more actual because of global distribution of data. In most cases only you decide what information about yourself to disclose but there are pieces of information you provide Internet servers with that can be available for other people without your agreement and even without your knowing. Among such data the IP address is the most critical one. This site is aimed to secure you against giving your IP address to anyone who can be interested in it (and note that there might be hackers among them).

Proxy Servers
A proxy server is a kind of buffer between your computer and the Internet resources you are accessing. They accumulate and save files that are most often requested by thousands of Internet users in a special database, called 'cache'. Therefore, proxy servers are able to increase the speed of your connection to the Internet. The cache of a proxy server may already contain information you need by the time of your request, making it possible for the proxy to deliver it immediately. The overall increase in performance may be very high. Also, proxy servers can help in cases when some owners of the Internet resources impose some restrictions on users from certain countries or geographical regions. In addition to that, among proxy servers there are so called anonymous proxy servers that hide your IP address thereby saving you from vulnerabilities concerned with it.

Anonymous Proxy Servers
Anonymous proxy servers hide your IP address and thereby prevent your from unauthorized access to your computer through the Internet. They do not provide anyone with your IP address and effectively hide any information about you and your reading interests. Besides that, they don't even let anyone know that you are surfing through a proxy server. Anonymous proxy servers can be used for all kinds of Web-services, such as Web-Mail (MSN Hot Mail, Yahoo mail), web-chat rooms, FTP archives, etc.

Why Should You Use Anonymous Proxy Servers?
Any web resource you access can gather personal information about you through your unique IP address - your ID in the Internet. They can monitor your reading interests, spy upon you and, according to some policies of the Internet resources, deny accessing any information you might need.

You might become a target for many marketers and advertising agencies who, having information about your interests and knowing your IP address as well as your e-mail, will be able to send you regularly their spam and junk e-mails.

A web site can automatically exploit security holes in your system using not-very-complex, ready-made, free hacking programs. Some of such programs may just hang your machine, making you reboot it, but other, more powerful ones, can get access to the content of your hard drive or RAM. Everything a web site may need for that is only your IP address and some information about your operating system
> LINK > THE DANGERS OF OPEN PROXY SERVERS

Some of this informaton below has a bit of a "propaganda spin" to make you want to use their services, but in general the info is still good.
Open proxy servers are those that do not require a password to logon or use.

Be warned - There are many dangers when using OPEN proxy servers.

Proxy servers require high Internet resources and bandwidth in order to be able to provide a public service. If someone is offering a free proxy service, you will want to make sure that the person or company has nothing to gain and that you can trust the connection.

The Proxy Connection offers over 700 virtual proxy servers spread across three separate dedicated networks. Do not be DECEIVED! If someone is offering a free proxy service, there is a catch somewhere. Considering the cost of bandwidth and machine maintenance, a free proxy service is simply not feasible.

If you are using a free proxy service or one of the many open proxy lists, you could be trusting your data, email messages, passwords or other personal information to a teenager that setup a proxy on the local school network. While thinking that using such a service has made you more secure, you have probably already become a victim.

Only proxy servers that are offered by an established company with direct phone lines and technical support should be used for security. An established business in the United States has their company and much more to loose by not providing a safe computing environment.

If possible, always use a proxy server hosted by a company with some kind of security background. There are security concerns that need to be addressed. If you sign up for a proxy service that Joe started in his basement, you may miss out on a full stealth environment and the full protection that you desire. An established security company will have the experience and seasoned professionals to provide you with a safe service.

How Do I know If I Am Using An Open Proxy Server?
There are two common ways to close a proxy server. When a proxy server is closed it will either force you to connect -from- only one IP address or a range of IP addresses, or it will require you to use a user name and password to connect and use it.

If you do not need to type in a user name and password, it is virtually always an open proxy server.

Some Of the Dangers
There are many dangers that come along with using open proxy servers. This is why many online Internet services and companies have started checking or 'probing' your connection when you join their service. The probing that is done is simple and harmless, it simply checks to see if your connection has common proxy ports open. If the ports are found, the service will make sure that it is a closed proxy system by attempting to make a connection to it. If the connection is made, it will check to see if it requires a password to use it. If the proxy is found to be open it will raise a red flag and sometimes deny you from using or purchasing their services.

These service checks or probes are harmless. They simply make sure that the user is not on an open proxy. If the proxy is open, they have no way of making sure that you are who you claim to be. There are far to many hackers using these open servers to commit credit card fraud, attack other online users, hack into computers or any one of hundreds of other illegal activities. If you are using an open proxy, someone can be watching your every move! To date, there are COUNTLESS honeypots and hackerpots out on the net. While thinking that you have made yourself more secure, you have actually opened yourself up for attack. When using an open proxy server, your PC is making a direct connection to another computer. You also do not know who is in control of this computer. Your passwords can be sniffed and your firewall tunneled. Your privacy can also be invaded as this person reads your email, snags your ICQ, IRC, AIM, MSN messages or any other unencrypted data that is sent through one of these obvious honey or hackerpots.

Misconfigured Proxy Servers
Most times when a proxy server is open it is because it has been misconfigured on installation, or the person that configured the server was simply not aware of the dangers in leaving it open. Other times the server was not properly firewalled. In almost every case, you have no way of knowing if the proxy server was open deliberately or if is was a misconfiguration. There is no large banner that pops up and says "I left this proxy server open for everyone in the world to connect to and use, come and eat up my bandwidth". Most open proxy servers are simply 'scanned for' and 'found' misconfigured servers. This accounts for them being on a list one day and gone the next. Often, when the network bandwidth takes the hit of hundreds of computers using it at the same time, the open proxy problem is found and quickly resolved.

Public Proxy Lists
Beware! Those that scan for open proxy servers and then add them to a public list, do not care if you get in trouble while using them. If you are found using an unauthorized server, it could be a class II felony. The server that you are using could be located at some Government agency or a company with a top level Government contract. Your real ISP information will be available to them in their system logs and you could be hunted down and prosecuted.

Honey Pots
Honey pots are open computers that are just waiting for someone to find and exploit. After they are exploited, they are monitored for a time and then legal action is often taken against those using these exploited systems.

Honey Pot machines are used by the Government all the time. It is a known fact that many different Government branches setup honey pots to attract hackers, terrorists and other offenders. A honey pot is a machine that is placed on the Internet wide open for redirect or attack. Everything that is done on or through the system is logged and traced. While the system is being used, complete information about the perpetrator(s) is gathered. The 'hacker' becomes the 'hacked' and after a period of time they have the hacker and his friends right where they want them. If you happen across one of these open honey pot proxy servers, everything that you do and every password that you use will be sniffed and logged. Included below are only a few of the many articles that have been written about this topic
By Keith Johnson, WSJ Interactive Edition

When a group of suspected Pakistani hackers broke into a U.S.-based computer system in June, they thought they had found a vulnerable network to use as an anonymous launching pad to attack Web sites across India. But what they had done was walk right into a trap known as a honeypot -- a specially equipped system deployed by security professionals to lure hackers and track their every move. For a month, every keystroke they made, every tool they used, every word of their online chat sessions was recorded and studied. The honeypot administrators learned how the hackers chose their targets, what level of expertise they had, what their favorite kinds of attacks were, and how they went about trying to cover their tracks so that they could nest on compromised systems.

War drivers beware, the next wireless network you tap might be part of an elaborate sting. By Kevin Poulsen, Jul 29 2002 1:00AM
Hackers searching for wireless access points in the nation's capital may soon war drive right into a trap. Last month researchers at the government contractor Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) launched what might be the first organized wireless honeypot, designed to tempt unwary Wi-Fi hackers and bandwidth borrowers and gather data on their techniques and tools of choice. Hacker Pots
Hacking is at an all time high. The knowledge required to break into a computer system a few years ago took some study and time. Today with the vast library of information and hacking tools, anyone with limited knowledge could get past a firewall or infect a computer with a trojan. Hackers of today, do not require much learning or effort at all. There are many 'over-night' hackers that grow daily one step at a time, looking to learn the next method on the list for finding their victims. Government agencies are not the only ones that setup honeypots.

IPB Image

All a hacker needs to do is to put a proxy server up on his, or a victim's computer and wait for a few hours for a scanner to find it. Within a day or two it is on a public list and his packet sniffer is working overtime collecting users credit card numbers, passwords and other personal information. While you use his open proxy server, every web page that you visit, every message that you send and every password that you type is logged. The Hacker Pots work the same way as the honeypots shown above work, only are being run by hackers. You never know when using an open proxy server if you are using a hackerpot or honeypot, but either way you can be sure that someone is watching you somewhere when you are on an open proxy server.

Reliability And Privacy
If you are looking for reliability and privacy, open proxy servers are not for you. When the proxy is open to everyone, it is being used by many people at the same time. If the user to bandwidth or the user to CPU ratio is not in sync, the system will drag down to a SLOW crawl. When you purchase a proxy account, the proxy provider will need to keep up with their service and add computers and bandwidth to accommodate their customers. When using an open proxy, you will find that the server is up one day and gone the next. Most times this is because the server was misconfigured and the high bandwidth usage attracted the administrators who closed or fixed the proxy.
In such cases the system logs are almost always sent to the federal computer crime squad.
You also may spend hours searching for another proxy in the list that is working, only to find that it is too slow to even load a full text URL in under five minutes. Using an open Internet proxy can turn your five minute Internet task into a three hour event, all for the sake of saving a few dollars.
----------------------
CGIProxy :
----------------------

This CGI script acts as an HTTP or FTP proxy. Through it, you can retrieve any resource that is accessible from the server it runs on. This is useful when your own access is limited, but you can reach a server that in turn can reach others that you can't. In addition, the user is kept as anonymous as possible from any servers. Common uses include: anonymous proxies similar to The Anonymizer, other personal uses, VPN-like functionality, and others. It's very simple to install, and very configurable

----------------------
PlainShell :
----------------------

PlainShell is a encrypted cgi proxy tunnel / HTTP test tool / administration tool.

It lets you surf the net through one or several webservers while encrypting the traffic between the first and last proxy with a 32 - 2048 bit RSA encryption.

You can see raw http response headers and make raw requests yourself, run your own code on proxies while using techniques (like sending code to run over network instead of storing it remotely, obfuscation) to leave less tracks.

J.A.P - Java Anonymous Proxy :

http://anon.inf.tu-dresden.de/index_en.html
JAP uses a single static address which is shared by many JAP users. That way neither the visited website, nor an eavesdropper can determine which user visited which website.

How it works
Instead of connecting directly to a webserver, users take a detour, connecting with encryption through several intermediaries, so-called mixes.

Info: JAP uses a predetermined sequence for the mixes. Such a sequence of linked mixes is called a mix cascade. Users can choose between different mix cascades. - more...

Since many users use these intermediaries at the same time, the internet connection of any one single user is hidden among the connections of all the other users. No one, not anyone from outside, not any of the other users, not even the provider of the intermediary service can determine which connection belongs to which user.

Info: A relationship between a connection and its user could only be determined if all intermediaries worked together to sabotage the anonymization. - a detailed description of mixing principles...

The intermediaries (mix providers) are generally provided by independent institutions which officially declare, that they do not keep connection log files or exchange such data with other mix providers.

It is also planned, that independent watchdogs, who work in the name of the JAP users, will insure that the mix providers hold to their official declarations
SocksCap intercepts the networking calls from WinSock applications and redirects them through the SOCKS server without modification to the orginal applications or to the operating system software or drivers.

GetAnonymous - Was poor , has some cool features , but the damn thing closes down every few minutes in the demo version, so there are better free programs already I think.

Hey I just wanted to add to this thread by giving you guys what I believe to be a great site for finding "Legit" Anonymous Proxies to use if you wanted to..... ALso they have a built in anonymity checker and whois on the site as well...... Anyhoo, if any of you can find that these are in fact NOT legit plz inform me, cause im using some of them (Im only using ones I found from this site)

Stay Invisible

They update it daily suppossedly, just check the View Proxies over on the left hand side of the page......
Moore
thanks but this link has it all, nomad, i usually start off at samair for their proxy listst, since girards page is now down.

check the links at them bottom of the page for more good stuff:
http://www.space.net.au/~thomas/quickbrowse.html

remember also that some proxy checkers are used to steal your working proxies , so dont go overboard testoing them at websites, stick to proxyrama or proxy verifier V7
Nomad
Umm yeah that link you posted isnt working tongue.gif

Unless.............. blink.gif
Moore
hey it should be working nomad , you sure arent blocking it anywhere?

i use this page everyday , its the best link page ive found so far.

so go to google and paste this in and see if you get a cached page view, or a link at least.

http://www.space.net.au/~thomas/quickbrowse.html

or
click this nomad !

ill post some more links soon , heres something to start with:

http://directory.google.com/Top/Computers/...t/Proxies/Free/

http://www.proxyblind.org/free.shtml

these are a few links from the page for anon web surfing..

http://www.guardster.com/
http://pxy01.pink-banana.com/cgi-bin/redirect.cgi

Nomad
Yeah I got it working... Lol I think at the time one of my Proxies I was using wouldnt allow that page or something... wink.gif Not tooo sure.

Anyhow, I was wondering if any of you, or just you Moore, have gotten a "reliable" proxy finding/checking program, since programs like proxyrama arent really doing too much for me other than pinging IP's..... maybe I dont know how to use it? I did read through all their help stuff on their site..... I dont know I just think it would be nice to have a list of Active Anonymous Proxies rather than having to visit these sites all the time..... ahhh who knows..... unsure.gif
Nomad
Ohhh yeah forgot to add...... Even though these sites do say that these proxies are anonymous etc. couldnt that all just be a hoax and these proxies really could be "Honey pots" or whatever...... Isnt their logs or something on the Proxy side even though the proxy MAY be anonymous or High Anonymous?...... guess I still dont fully understand......

*Goes off in search of more info tongue.gif *
r00ted
back when I was interested in Proxies, I used MultiProxy (I think the URL has been posted in this thread) but the project is kinda done with I think tongue.gif the page hasnt been updated in like 2 years or something last I checked.....but, it has a way of checking if a proxy is "anonymous" but Im not sure how it can determine if 1 is anonymous or not....kinda weird.
Nomad
Well I finally found a download link for Proxy Checker 7....... that sucker is hard to find laugh.gif

I just think that Moore's first post in this thread really scared me to the point where I shouldnt be using any proxy anyways...... LoL but im still using various ones which I believe are REAL so called "elite" proxies.......
Moore
to be safe try to avoid any proxy from any american owned country like Aus,GB and the other s in the list.

the best proxy verifiers/finding tool for me was probably proxyrama , or admuncher smile.gif , but ais alive proxy looked to be the shit when i tested it , just wasnt the full version, AAtools is also very cool.

proxyrama is my first choice and it will search all the interent for proxies for you if you let it , and verfiy them , remember that proxies have very short lives , especially once too many people use them, so there may be 1000s of dead proxies still on lists..

if you use something that allows you to rotate your proxies , that is also the best way, i think proxomiron and multiproxy , maybe others can do this, then youre not stuck on one proxy but switch every 30 seconds etc to break up your trail.

proxies are a lot of work to keep up with , and sometimes its not worth it, lol.

check out this good site too:
http://www.securibox.net/

Steganos Anonym (techtv did a review of this) will randomly change your proxy every few minutes, tongue.gif but, as reported, it messed with my DNS servers I think somehow....lol. On my dialup box, even with the bugger OFF as in NOT in the Task Manager (CTRL ALT DEL) list, it wouldnt let me surf the net, BUT, the minute I uninstalled it? Net access was back sad.gif

Maybe some others can try it tongue.gif Also, I dont know what proxies it does use.....I didnt spend too much time on it, the best program of that type, would be 1 that you could import your own list of proxies, and it would verify them, and if valid, connect to em, etc tongue.gif But Im not sure how "high-tech" anonym is wink.gif
Moore

Steganos isnt worth the trouble , it leaks your ip as far as i know, the best proxies to use are socks proxies really , as http proxies can allow java and scripting to get your real ip address . but socks isnt affected by java applets and will keep your anonimity, and the best proxies to use are always level one proxies , use a verifier , anything else is not secure.

this is a very handy tool below , you can modify the search list to clean any bad ips from your proxy lists , which i think is awesome, all you have to do is extract it to a directory and run the exe file, it does not call home or anything and it works . laugh.gif

Proxy List Cleaner

From KAMA

------------------------------------

Welcome to yet another tool form KAMA.

Well most us use proxies for fun and serious business smile.gif

Most of the proxies are downloaded from various sites that host proxy lists and by special proxy tools. Are they safe ??? well most of them are BUT some can be pretty dangerous to use !!! Well what happens if you accidentaly use a proxy from FBI or US defence, you may end up counting the bars than proxies !!!

What does this tool do ??
This tool is used to scan proxy list for known dangerous proxies and deletes them from the list. As simple as that.

Installing the tool :
Inorder to work properly all the files in this zip is to be installed in the same directory.

Pretty simple...

hmmm.....what I'm wondering is how does it determine a "dangerous" proxy? Is it 1 of those things where its like an "In My Honest Opinion these proxies are dangerous"?
Moore

lol, biggrin.gif no theres a text file you can modify to scan for whatever you tell it too..

this is what it has to start off with, but ive gota lot to add yet, the best thing is you can clean thousands of proxies with a single click.

yeah it is not bad I have a "freeware" version wink.gif and it works alright...You just need to slow down how often it changes your proxy else it will change it every second wink.gif especially if you are not on broadban this is strnious on the system I had the same problem where intrnet performance was WAY DOWN! But I think it would be worth a second look Moore... smile.gif

EDIT: I CHANGED MY MIND IT SUCKS! See my post at the bottom for further details

@redzulu although it is not for free for the full access and I had some trouble setting it up...For now I am using Steganos although I do not trust if you click check you anonimity they give you your own IP address which defeats the whole purpose of the program...LOL...If they can get it I am sure anyone else could as well. So I am looking for a program right now there were some @ sourceforge.net but most of the projects are dead so I am looking... ph34r.gif

hey theres also some good info in this thread @wilders.org:

n0z
if i wanted to use all of my internet activity through a secure and trustworthey proxy, how would i do so. being able to find proxies to use is not a proble, but being able to configure my internet conneciton is.

im new to using proxies.
r00ted
n0z, as far as i know, you just go into Internet Options, Connections, select your connection (or click LAN settings for cable or if a "Connection" isnt showing in the box at the top of that dialog window). Then you just type in the IP address and port of the proxy
OzRod
Hi all,
I'm along the same thoughts as nOz, am also looking for a good (hopefully recommended) SECURE Proxy server (or servers) one may be able to use for anonymous web surfing. I have VERY STRONG FEELINGS about somebody peeking their busy-body noses into my PRIVATE business - if I want to surf to what might be classed (by some minor (sic) group) as "banned" newsgroups or such 'web sites', for my own personal & private reasons, then whatever URL's I call up in my browser or what web pages (be they pics or movies or newsgroup posts) that I look at or are downloaded to my computer (many web sites one doesn't have any idea what they look like TILL one gets a completed download from them) or if I go on-line to a newsgroup and (god-forbid (sic/sic/sic) 'post' my thoughts/ideas/opinions about any particular subject I may have an interest in _ IS NOBODY ELSE'S BUSINESS BUT MINE. As long as I am not hurting anybody else or causing anybody any harm, then as long as I keep within the 'spirit' of the laws (sic) currently applicable in my country, then what I do in my own time on the web is and should ONLY be my business and nobody elses.

So there we are - I'll climb down from this very small soapbox and get on with my question.

Anyone currently using say any of the 'secure' web proxy services such as - Guarder, or MegaProxy... etc? Or can anyone recommend what may be the better ones to use for safe / private / secure web surfing?

Am sick of trying to find enough suitable public 'anonymous' proxies every day to be able to happily switch between a group of them to provide me with some web surfing privacy - I tend to spend more time looking for such proxies then I actually do on the web once I have them in my proxy list - all I want is a simple (maybe single) secure proxy that I can do all my internet surfing thru without any freeloaders and spies trying to hop onto what I'm looking at - just to then tell me that I can't (or that is illegal) - THEY CAN GO JUMP FROM A PERFECTLY GOOD PLANE WITHOUT A PARACHUTE AND LAND BUTT FIRST ON THE NEWYORK TOWER SPIRE - for all I care.

Any help would be appreciated.
Moore
hi OzRod , well for simple web browsing , many of the proxy server providers in this list would be a good start

- http://www.proxys4all.com/web-based.shtml

just go through each of the links and try them yourself , i dont mind proxy guardster , as long as you block media fastclick in your hosts file , so that gets rid of their ads.

there are a few good web site links to follow in the guide for finding free proxy servers , sometimes you can waste a lot of time looking and when you do find something theres no telling how long it will work for

also something to look into is socksifying all your connections , running them through a sockscap connection - socks proxy - which covers setting up the proxy connection for each individual program , some people have their bittorrent connections working this way , there was a borrowed guide on this in the anonymous p2p progs thread by bluetack , wherever that is , [ edit; i found it ohmy.gif , link is below ], laugh.gif the links i posted in this guide are full of info to get you going. need help with something just ask .. biggrin.gif

Guide to Anonymous P2P networks :
http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=53
OzRod
Thanks Moore!!
Very usefull info. Have tried all the links you suggested - interesting sites.

Thanks for the hint on 'socksifying' my connection - have dl'd a couple of progs that are supposed to do this foe me - "FreeCap" & "SocksCap". Will now see how usefull they
are to my needs.

You mention the proxy - Guardster - have you used it yourself? What's it like for speed and accessability? Do you think it is 'really' private (or do you think they maintain logs)?

"Media fastclick" - in my Hosts file - I'm currently using Opera 7.23 as my browser - I don't think it relates to using the Hosts file - or am I reading this wrongly?

Thanks anyway for your reply.

OzRod
Moore
Hi ozrod, yes i have used the Guardster service , i think they were based in washington last time i looked them up , or at least i was blocking some connections that were going that way , so yeah they probably keep logs of everything , , im also on dialup and the speed is not a problem , you cant download some things through it , i think it has a few other restrictions , but it is decent enough for browsing.

J.A.P may also be something to consider : http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=2809, i used it for a while before it ran into trouble , but i havent touched it lately , also check my reply to your post in the privacy forum ..

So do you use a HOSTS file , it is independent of any browser or program , windows will check your hosts file before you make any conections and redirect anything in it to localhost 127.0.0.1 if its listed as such , i also use it to speed up access to a few sites with their correct IP addresses.

We have a whole forum on HOSTS :
http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/index.php?c=14

So if you add media fastclick to your hosts like this : 127.0.0.1 media.fastclick.net

It will not let the ads through , but you will have to modify the url as it connects to media fastclick first , and blocks the connection , once you remove the fastclick part of the url you can click on it again to access the guardster service.

this is what it will look like when its blocked:
http://media.fastclick.net/w/get.media?sid=7445&m=5&url=http%3A//proxy.guardster.com

You will want the start of it to look like this to work , although this link wont work from here
http://proxy.guardster.com/cgi-bin/

And get yourself these HOSTS managers to make life easier:
http://accs-net.com/hostess/

Toadbees Hosts manager:
http://members.aol.com/toadbee/hoster.zip

Im sure you will have more questions, please let us know if you have any problems ok.
OzRod
Thanks Moore!!

Finaly bit the bullet - signed up with Guardster - they be now located in Anguilla (I think in the West Indies) - so far looks very good - I have a dial-up connection to my ISP - so when I log on-line, I then go to Guardster, and all of my online surfing is now done via SSL encryption. Also their privacy policy states that they don't maintain online logs of clients ONLY accounts for client connections (time online ONLY) - so they can then do the billing at the end of each 12 month usage period for each client - no other logs are maintained. I'm finding that I can virtually download ANYTHING I like without any restrictions - also much faster than what I used to get BEFORE - one good thing they have is - blocked AD sites & Banners from all web pages downloaded to my machine - makes surfing more of a pleasant experience and much more efficient - I don't have to spend inordinant amounts of online time trying to get rid of such things as well as trying to ensure my online privacy at the same time. For my $20.00 per year payment - I don't think this small cost will break the bank to give me online surfing privacy at least!!!!

Thanks for the info on the HOST file - will look into it's usefullness for my needs.

OzRod
Moore
Good to hear Ozrod biggrin.gif

you will have much better protection with the subscription than using the free version like i do , i was checking their privacy policy and the free version doesnt encrypt your connection with your isp, just to the websites you visit.
so you made a good choice , i think the restrictions i had were also because it was the free service.. sad.gif

so do you notice any media fastclick stuff , or you are using the HOSTS file to block their crap , maybe they dont bother you with the paid service.. ??
OzRod
Hi Moore,

Nothing yet with any media fastclick stuff, but my use of the paid service is only in early days. So far, it has been very quick and ad & banner less - better surfing experience i can tell you.

Haven't tried the hosts file method as yet - of the opinion to let sleeping dogs lie - if it aint broke don't fix it - etc...smile.gif..

Thanks for your input.

OzRod

Imo, proxies just are too unsafe to use and just a false sense of security. I mean, basically you're letting some 3rd party "whoever/whatever" connect to your system and you're really never gonna be sure on EXACTLY who it is. Sure they say ANON, SECURE, NO LOGS, and loads of other words that make you feel safe, but...seriously. You really have no clue who or what is monitoring you and logging every pitstop or redlight area you go to.

Hell, if I'm gonna get tagged man, I want it to be MY OWN FAULT, not because I ignorantly allowed "VIJAY ATAH" who was working for the FBI, to get info on me he shouldnt have ever gotten in the 1st place. If they do it to me, well thats malicious hacking or wiretapping, without any evidende to base things on. But you connecting to them out of the blue, well it's like "Well well, what do we have here."

I used to use SocksChain, and nearly 85% (Yes, 85% I'm not just using that number for the hell of it) were blocked by Blockpost/PW due to them being either "Inet Authorities" or GHOST OF TERROR proxies, that is now a new source in the BLM. Keep in mind thats 85% of 1000 proxies. 1000 PROXIES!! That doesnt leave you much to mess with, or feel safe with, for that matter. And the ones that seemed legit, well..ya still dont fuckin know anyway. That could have been one that BLM didnt have yet, etc. You just don't know, and unfortunately, that really sux because they sure could come in handy when doing....well ya know biggrin.gif

Also they are totally useless for IRC, P2P (atleast from what I have experienced.) One the "outside" of the server, you're 100% safe, sure, yea, thats great 'n all. Someone WHOIS'S you and they get the proxy info. But once you download, you can kiss that goodbye. What people need to understand, is that the download is GOING TO YOU, NOT THE PROXY. YOURE THE ONE WHO IS GONNA HAVE THE TRANSFER. YOU ARE CONNECTING FROM SOMEWHERE, ON A LEGIT ISP. Unless you OWN THE ISP, OR HAVE CLOSE FRIENDS THERE, you aint gonna be able to hide yourself. I tried that ages ago, and had a friend do a simple DOS netstat (Nothing fancy at all with a netstat). Within 1 minute, he pastes me my IP, ISP, their domain, their website, etc etc, and needless to say, I looked like a total dumbass, thinking I was totally protected. If a simple netstat gives that shit up, then imagine what hackers at the FBI could do. Plus they have an incentive: A PAYCHECK. All you can do is cross your fingers, and hope the IP is blocked in your firewall, and to keep your BLM updated constantly from the baddies. If you cant connect to them at all, then hey, you have nothing to fear.....

Interesting , thanks for the comment .

I rarely use proxies these days either and prefer to just have my ISP spying on me ..but they are still very useful at times , I dont use them that much anymore for downloading or "you know" , whatever that is youre talking about. ..??

Using a proxy / socks proxy should prevent anyone from getting your IP /ISP info , since the download is going from the source through the proxy to you , or thats how I have mine setup anyway , the download never goes directly from the source to me or whats the point of using a proxy at all. ?

The Ghostofterror proxy list is just a list of all proxies fullstop , good and bad , they are blocked because they are on proxy lists , so you cant expect to use the list if you also want to use proxies.. wink.gif

It's true the FBI and hackers like to have their own proxies available to follow people's online activities , but if youre doing illegal activities you deserve everything you get anyway. They will probably catch you sooner or later if you are worth the effort whether you use proxies or not , you cant really complain for getting busted by them.

I cant see how you could get into a enormous amount of trouble just for chaining a bunch of proxies to surf through.. but if you have evidence of this then feel free to post it.

Hell, if I'm gonna get tagged man, I want it to be MY OWN FAULT, not because I ignorantly allowed "VIJAY ATAH" who was working for the FBI, to get info on me he shouldnt have ever gotten in the 1st place.

LOL laugh.gif I agree. I still see a proxy as technology to allow a system administrator to route multiple users' activity through one portal. Not an anonymizer. The anonimity of the portal and it's users is then ultimately up to the system administrator, imho. ph34r.gif

if you're going to use proxies, at least follow these steps to make your lists at least a bit safer...
 1. Download Charon
 2. Load your list
 3. Click "Filter List" and then click "Resolve Proxies"
 4. When it's finished, click "Filter List" and then "Filter Dodgy"

it has the same effect as using protowall or any other program like that, it makes it a bit safer, but doesn't guarentee anything...

Thanks Girard , I looked at that program once before but wasnt too sure how dodgy it was.

The download link doesnt seem to work though , got the zip downloaded but its 2KB and corrupt. ?

try http://rhino.securibox.net/charon.php instead

smile.gif works , thanks mate ..

I've been using Charon for a while now to filter dodgy IP's from proxy lists. It saves Peerguardian a lot of work when I verify the proxies. Still, the bad IP list in Charon is limited to say the least. Does anyone have a clue how to easily convert other list formats (like the PG IP list, anti-p2p list, etc) to Charon's bad.ini format?

Thanks,

Why do all of you insist on using programs for proxy connections instead of just configuring msexporer for a proxy. If this is done with a high annonymous server "AND" java is blocked in your internet options then there is no trace of your real ip, cept at the proxy of course. This method doesnt support tunneling as far as I know, but then neither do most of these other programs. I hope that I get a decent answer but I feel that most people probably just depend on prog more than necissary.

n0z, as far as i know, you just go into Internet Options, Connections, select your connection (or click LAN settings for cable or if a "Connection" isnt showing in the box at the top of that dialog window). Then you just type in the IP address and port of the proxy

Dont forget that you have to shut java permisions off. If you leave java permisions on, even at the highest level then your real ip can be sniffed using a java command. Stayinvisable.com has a function that will check your ip. Go there, if they guess wrong then guess what, your invisable.

And whats so wrong with using a program. ?

I started out with explorer for using a proxy , it's sh!t compared to a dedicated program , and doesnt have any of their features. I like to have options. Its that simple.

This guide is for covering all the best options , nowhere does it say dont use IE Explorer , people have a choice biggrin.gif
