I just started using avast a cuple of says ago seems like an ok prog. Its free and can scan your incoming p2p files. If you do alot of downloading say 2-10gigs a day it is a huge resource hog (between 300-800mb) and you have to reboot because you cant kill out the processes. But other than that in a mild setup looks like it would do alot of good for a free client.Or if you just didnt scan the incoming p2p files.
Murcielago
NOD32... very good and scans the drive very fast so you don't have to wait for it to Hog your PC for hours at an end to scan the data. Its lite on the resouces and mostly accurate as well.
meezz
I have tried lots of anti-virus programs. I like kaspersky the best. It is suppose to have the largest virus database. The full system scans seem to take longer then other anti-virus programs. Another good anti-virus you might want to try is AVG. I tried NOD and its realtime scanning made programs that write files lag like hell(games and anything that made a log file)
Skorpion
I've tried AVG and it's okay. It has a no frills interface that doesn't seem to go with XP, but that's not a problem really. I've also tried NOD32, but I prefer AVG over it. I currently use Norton Antivirus, but I also use TrojanHunter to supplement it since it didn't do so well on the trojan detection tests. I've used McAffee and it was a resource hog, plus it didn't seem to scan incoming e-mail. It did do well on trojan detection though. It's been a while since I've tried Kapersky. It seemed okay, at least, but kinda clunky or not very user friendly. Then again, it's been a while so I could be mistaken.

I've tried many antivirus programs and I think these are the best:
NOD32
AntiVir XP
KAV

Hey Guys

Thanks Very Much for all the replies, sorry i havn't replied ive not been able to access my computer sad.gif

ive tried AVG - Norton - Mcafee

Norton and mcafee was resource hogs and AVG didn't catch things that mcafee did...

im thinking of either trying Kaspersky or NOD32

thanks for all the advice & ill let you know if i find a suitable one.

ok, on a unrelated note what firewalls do you use? im currently using outpost - just curious as to what your all using biggrin.gif

cheers

Dean
4ke.
Sygate is the best firewall i've used, and for the AV just use some online scan coz every AV is a ressource hog when you pay attention what you download your PC will be clean smile.gif
Lite
I use BOTH NOD32 and KAV 4.5/ AVP 3.5 (still deciding which to use).

Reasons: KAV has THE BEST detection (no questions asked). However NOD32 is ultra light on resources, great "Zero Day" malware detection (due to the advanced heuristics) and a HTTP monitor (which is personally love), however is lacking in trojan, worm and backdoor detection (although improving)

Choice is yours in the end.... although both will provide great protection.
Smoka
AVG is good and fast but it has not been good enough at repairing/cleaning files that are infected.

McAfee I still use too (used to use DR Solomon before it got bought out by McAfee), I have found it works quite well, but again is getting bloated.

Used to use Symantec/Norton quite a while ago but have found it to be too much bloat and also cause too many problems!! The last time I used it, it managed to kill an exchange server and the only way we could fix was to rebuild. Now that really pissed me off, and needless to say I wouldn't recomment it or use it ever again, anyways that's the end of my rant about Norton.

I think that I'm gonna try Sophos soonish ... it looks really good.

Check out this site for quite a few different AV engines:

Kaspersky without a doubt.

Nod is fast because it doesnt scan everything , Norton is just a joke and Mcafee is a pure waste of time , AVG is ok , but spend some time in hijacked / virus forums and youll see just how badly some of those are at protecting people.

Anyone who doesnt have a antivirus installed and downloads / or uses P2P is a moron , there are viruses that can infect you , simply through connecting to another infected person , sorry , but its just stupid to run without one and only use online scanners.. even though I know lots of people like to do it that way. tongue.gif

Just because youve never been infected yet , is no reason to not have a resident av running , or the lamers excuse its too high on my computers resources lol, get a better computer then.

you only need to get hit by one nasty virus to f_ck you up , and the people with no firewall or antivirus , geez... anyone want to guess where all the worms keep coming from lol blink.gif

I use Kaspersky, with F-Secure as the backup. Works great.

Here is some AV test scores from http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/default.asp?id=67&mnu=67. Note: The data is from versions with all software and def updates as of August 25, 2004. The company only does tests every 6-8 months or so:

QUOTE
*  The test was made on 10-25 August 2004, using Windows 2000 SP4 on a CELERON 2400 Mhz, 256MB DDRAM.

*  All programs tested had the latest versions, upgrades and updates and they were tested using their full scanning capabilities e.g. heuristics, full scan etc.

*  The 76556 virus samples were chosen using VS2000 according to Kaspersky, F-Prot, RAV, Nod32, Dr.Web, Sweep, BitDefender, E-Trust and McAfee antivirus programs. Each virus sample was unique by virus name, meaning that AT LEAST 1 antivirus program detected it as a new virus.

*  ALL virus samples were unpacked and the only samples that were kept were the ones that were packed using external-dos-packers (that means not winzip, winrar, winace etc).

*  The virus samples had the correct file extension using a special program (Renexts) and were unique, according to checksum32 filesize.

*  Most "fake" virus samples were removed, as well as "garbage" files.

*  The program PER was not tested because there was no english demo version available.

*  The programs BOClean, VET, Titan, RisingAV, Ikarus and Freedom were not tested because there was no demo version available.

*  The program InVircible did not include a "typical" scanner-function and could not be tested.

*  The program V-Catch checks only mail accounts and could not be tested.

The following file types were used.

BAT, ΒΙΝ, CLA, CLASS, CLS, COM, CSC, DAT, DOC, ELF, EML, EXE, HLP, HQX, HTA, HTM, IMG, INF, INI, JS, MAC, MDB, MSG, OLE, PHP, PIF, PL, PPT, PRC, REG, SCR, SH, SHS, SMM, STI, TD0, TPU, VBA, VBS, WBT, XLS, XMI, XML.

The virus samples were divided into these categories, according to the type of the virus :

*  File = BeOS, FreeBSD, Linux, Palm, OS2, Unix, BinaryImage, BAS viruses.

*  MS-DOS = MS-DOS and HLL*. viruses.

*  Windows = Win.*.* viruses.

*  Macro = Macro and Formula viruses.

*  Malware = DoS, Constructors, Exploit, Flooders, Hoax, Jokes, Nukers, Sniffers, Spoofers, Virus Construction Tools, Virus Tools, Corrupted, Droppers, Intended, PolyEngines.

*  Script = BAT, Corel, HTML, Java, Scripts, VBS, WBS, Worms, PHP, Perl viruses.

*  Trojans-Backdoors = Trojan and Backdoor viruses.

Virus.gr is a great independent testing site biggrin.gif

The guy who runs that site has a lot of viruses in his personal collection and probably uses more viruses in his tests than the majority of other test sites.

Yes, and now you might see why when it comes to programs like Trojan Hunter and TDS being fanboyed on forum sites like SpywareInfo I tend to get a wee bit vocal in erm..."re-educating" some people smile.gif

My favorite antivirus is definetly kaspersky. I've been using it for the past 6 months and nothing has slipped by it.

All good software posted - but do try F-Secure Client Security (no anti spam or privacy stuff) ....

I personally use avg it's free and no need to pay for updates. Plus it catches a lot of viruses, although sometimes you have to delete some files yourself.
splashmonkey
F-Secure all the way for me. Not for everyone, but it works for me - I use it on my Linux boxes too.

how about a different approach, like what not to use wink.gif

Norton a/v : both me - 18 months ago and my friend - 2 months ago got hacked, cought trojans and the person eve managaed to turn the a/v software off. I was using 2002 version and her version was 2004???

Sophos : this was quite good but when it got to about 65 gig of file on my 120 gig disk, the processes just ground to a halt.

i'm now a happy user in the land of NOD32

I like(d) ZoneAlarm, and TrendMicro.

Another good anti-virus you might want to try is AVG.

>>>AVG SUCKS<<< This prg has the world's worst engine and virus database. Don't use it!!!

The best ones to use are EITHER:
< F-Secure >
OR
< Kaspersky >

I myself use Kaspersky and it is without doubt the best antivirus engine and database. Like any other AV prg it does do real-time scanning too, which WILL affect the system performance of your computer. This best thing to do is to switch off real-time scanning and any schedules, so as not to interupt your work. Then, schedule a scan, say, twice a week, to run through the night, starting at about 2 or 3 am, or whenever you know you're not going to need to use it for several hours.

Hi guys,

I think you will like this program. unfortunately it's only in dutch language. It's called hitmanpro and it combines the following anti spyware programs:

Ad-Aware SE (6.2)
Spy Sweeper 3
Spybot Search & Destroy 1.3
CWShredder 2.13
SpywareBlaster 3.3
Spyware Block List
Sysclean Package
SuperDAT VirusScan

The great thing about all this is that it runs them all after eachother automaticely. You will only be prompted for a license agreement of each program. It also updates ALL defintion files before it starts scanning. It's a great help to me. Check it out

The best thing to do for you maybe satans spawn , I think it's more a personal preference..

Real time scanning can help prevent most trojans and hijacks from even being able to install , thereby making removal unneccessary. A possible small decrease in system performance is a lot better option than allowing a virus or exploit to have free entry into your system.

Besides webpage hijacks , there are also many p2p worms that can even infect your system during the file transfer itself , something that real time AV protection can stop.

I'll second moore with the Norton and Mcaffe comments, also Kasperski. However Kasperski is quite heavy. I have been using PCCillin Internet Security 2005 since it came out. Recently downloaded and changed to Kasperski because of compatibility issues with Outpost. When I changed over I did a full scan with PCCillin then Kasperski. Kasperski didn't pick up anything that PCCillin had missed. biggrin.gif

Not sure how long they have had a free version but bitdefender has apparently the highest rated free antivirus software.

For me its been Kaspersky which is exellent, but AVG has also been a massive hit.
I was useing AVG for ages, until my licence ran out.
Also the AV in ZoneAlarm Security Suite is really good.
These three are the best I've used, thats compared against Norton and co...but this is just whats worked well for me, it might not work aswell for the mass'ess.
I would like to try F-Secure oneday, they seem to have alot of knowledge and I enjoy reading there site.

There are no best choice.
All depend on your need.
Kaspersky is exellent at detecting with no doubt,
but not so good when comes to cleaning.
I think no one would want a very important file to be useless after cleaning.
Or if you are under the networks you may want to prevent the outbreak.
And it's very important that a good AntiVirus shoud not generate any false positives when scanning all clean files.
It's evil that a AntiVirus tell you it find a clean file (especially very important) infected and make you decide to delete it.
You may choose to repair, but don't forgot many AntiVirus that have good detection rate lack of good repairing ability.

You can look into the folowing site to decide the solutions you need:

Also there are no solution for those "File Collectors".
It simple to write a malware that cant be detected by any AntiVirus on the earth.
Be sure not to download crack and ensure the file is official version.

i use nod antivirus for real time scanning and kaspersky for on demand scans (weekly). nod's heuristic scanning puts it way ahead of other antivirus tools, plus it uses few system resources.

avg is a good option for a free av - their databases are the same as kaspersky's as far as i know - only difference being they update slightly slower...
